Not that I am endorsing speeding but the lady in the link was driving to slow in the left lane.

Even if the ticket gets thrown out, at least she has learned not to hog the left lane.

Ever hear of a "Rhode Island roadblock"?

It's when several cars stay side by side on the highway at or below the speed limit.

Old people around here seem to like that behavior pattern.

Grammar police interjection: Too slow, dammit!

I notice the headline completely ignores the "while in the fast lane" part of the story. I hope dealing with this inconvienced the hell out of her.

Isn't this the reason for having machine guns or small rocket launchers on the front of your bike or car?

MOST States have an ordinance stating that you ONLY use the left lane for PASSING. You will get ticketed in New Jersey or Pennsylvania if you stay in the left lane for no good reason.

PS: Bravo to that trooper!!

I have personally witnessed several people getting pulled over for not "keeping right" or failing to use a turnout on a 2 lane road when there are cars behind them.

Several years ago, my boss (at the time) came back from vacation bitching about several tickets he got while driving his land barge on the freeway and twisty mountain roads. He got a similar ticket to this lady because he was only doing 55 in the left lane and refused to move right (he felt he shouldn't have to move because he was "officially" a carpool. He tried to fight the tickets and lost. All of us at work applauded when he told us he lost and boy was he pissed at us. He still couldn't understand why he lost or got the tickets in the first place.

BTW: We call the slow moving folks in the left lane, "Road Boulders".

When they first opened a new highway here in the bay area (HWY 85) the CHP was running a commercial on the local station basically reminding people if they are only doing 65mph in the left lane, they should probably move to the right. The speed limit on that road is 65.

It's not a penalty for driving below the speed limit, or driving safely in crosswinds...it's a penalty for doing that IN THE LEFT LANE. The article spins it to make her sound like a victim. I need to write to NBC4 and see if they can adjust the angle some...

Unfortunately this is the same attitude my own mother has - "I'm going fast enough for anyone else on this road". And that is WRONG. It's not their decision to make. If someone wants to pass...MOVE RIGHT. Period. End of discussion. If you aren't wearing a badge and driving a cruiser...you do NOT get to decide what speed traffic around you travels.

The ONLY time (and I'll have to pull out my driver handbook to make sure) it's OK to travel in the passing lane, is in a heavy ramp/merge area to avoid merging traffic. Which is where we get this neat thing called "congestion" - from people travelling in the left lane.

I hope the citation stands up. I understand her point of view...but she should have moved right. Period. It's an epidemic in this state, and it's getting to the point where if you flash-to-pass...you get brake-checked. People are out of control around here. I don't know if its just Maryland, or if it's more widespread...but it's getting bad. LEO's need to do MORE of this sort of ticketing. Wolfie is right - "it's not just a sign...".

I could not believe this happened in Maryland! Shock! I drive 125 miles round trip to work every day and this is my number one pet peeve. I call them "Citizen Speed Monitors". They block the passing lane and it creates a hazardous situation for everybody because traffic bunches up behind them. Trucks and buses are particularly egregious offenders here. I have seen them stay in the left lane of Rt 97 for the entire 17 miles.

The OTHER thing is douches who wait to let somebody out of a store or whatever. This happens at the light at the end of my street. People who do this think they are oh so polite but it never occurs to them that some of the people behind them are going to have to wait through the next light because they wouldn't MOVE. Grrrrrrrrr!

Truck drivers in Indiana are like that. 1 mph more than the truck on the right, so it takes forever for them to overtake and get back into the right lane.

I'm amazed everyday at how unwilling people are at yielding to faster traffic. These people then honk when I finally get around them in haste. It's like they're on an easy Sunday drive every day.

Road Boulders...

Speaking of such. In Florida, we are in the middle of "snowbird" season. It's funny, it used to be the Q-tips in a Cadillac that ran 25 in a 55. Now it's more likely to be middle aged people in a SUV.

I don't understand how anyone can drive with such poor situational awareness as to not know they are holding everyone up. So that leaves the assumption they are just being asshats.

Then there are the ones that are afraid of taking a corner faster than a 90 year old on a walker, all the while leaving the back of the car in the travel lane. Many, many crashes happen here that way.

Perhaps the worst are the ones that zip into traffic if they see the tiniest break and after they pull out in front of you, they crawl along when they could have waited 30 more seconds and had the road to themselves.

not know they are holding everyone up

They know.

They a) don't care, or b) are self-righteous enough that they have appointed themselves Guardian of the Highway, and shall dictate thy speed (because obviously we can't handle it ourselves).

I love the folks who pick and choose the laws they observe. The most militant speed-limit-drivers...ignore the other laws like move right except to pass, lights on with wipers (no, DRL's do not count because you still have no TAILLIGHTS), and my personal favorite, the flash-to-pass brake-check.

I re-read that...and wanted to clarify. Yes, I pick and choose as well because, technically, I speed. However, the law I choose to disobey is my choice about my driving, not my choice about yours. I think what it comes down to is, people need to get their noses out of OTHER people's driving...and worry about their own (because it's pretty dismal and could definitely use some attention!).

Rat man.....your little rant has described my wife.

She says "they don't need to drive faster than me, I'm five miles over the limit". She claims to be uncomfortable at using the mirror on the right to move back into traffic on the right. I tell her to then not get into the left lane, and that she does not own the highway, and should not dictate what others do on it.

Then I crawl into my dog house. But then, on a long trip when she is driving, the silent treatment isn't all bad.

I have to say that I'm a bit surprised that people support this ticket so much. I have real doubts that it will hold up in court. While I'm all for enforcing keep right except to pass laws, that isn't the law cited with the ticket, unless I've missed something. The issues isn't about her actual speed, it's about her speed relative to traffic. It doesn't sound like that's what she was written up for though. In fact being within a couple MPH of the limit helps her case according to the law, unless the really want set a court precedence that speeding is EXPECTED. Her claim of weather conditions is a tough one to dismiss in court too. Sounds to me that either the cop didn't do a good job writing the ticket, or the reporter didn't do a good job reporting the story.

This leads to a pet peeve of mine, how fast are you allowed to go. I would much rather have a speed that you are allowed to travel, and if you go faster you are in ticket range, then set speed limits accordingly. We have too many roads that were designed for fast travel, that then got set to 55 mph many years ago, but never revised when that national speed limit went away. Now we have people doing 20 over the limit in places and the cops don't bat an eye, but other areas where 5 over gets you busted.

Another pet peeve is when traveling the interstate in light traffic on cruise controls when some guy who has obviously been going faster than you for quite a while catches up, passes you, pulls into your lane and slows down.

News story on the car hitting the house implies that the driver likely had a medical problem. She ran a stop sign and hit the house at about 50 mph according to a witness. Makes sense with the tracks I saw. A family of 5 was home at the time with no injuries.

She was written for failure to keep right, same as a "failure to yield".

Fourth paragraph.

But at the same time they are citing her speed, which was very close to the limit. It's a judgement call on the part of the officer and the accused. According to the law at that point, it should get dismissed. Of course this is traffic court. I've always found traffic court to be a total crap shoot where the law often has little to do with anything.

I'm glad to see enforcement of this law, but there's got to be a better way to present it.

This is where I miss my 8" lifted Mega cab cummins with a HUGE front bumper and hadley train horns. People got real nervous when you hung it over the trunk of their shit box and gave them a blast on the airhorns. MOST people took off like they were shot out of a cannon and got the hell out of the way. I spent 13 hours driving home from Daytona today and saw the LLL's (left lane loungers) hard at work today. It DOES cause a huge safety concern when everybody gets bunched up behind them.....

I've wanted one ever since and someday I will have one. Will also install one on the girlfriends car.

6gears, reminds me of our old '88 Dodge Ram pickup. It had a big chrome rear bumper that seemed to attract modern sedans. We got rear ended in that pickup several times at stop lights, with no damage what so ever, except for sore heads and necks for the occupants, and the nearly totaled cars that were mysteriously attracted to its rear end.
