I was trying to stock up just before the madness. I got most of what I wanted ammo-wise, but not all, unfortunately.

Kicking myself a bit, but I have bills to pay and mouths to feed.

Google turned up this:
During the height of active battle operations in Iraq, US soldiers used 5.5 million rounds of ammunition a month. Extrapolating the figures, the DHS has purchased enough bullets over the last 10 months to wage a full scale war for almost 30 years.

"It would be nice, but unfortunately we rank behind the DOD, .gov, foreign partners, ?? Consumer ammo is last priority. Reloading components even lower.... "

so consumer ammo is the last priority, but reloading is a lower priority than consumer ammo (which is the last priority)?
; )

You know it's bad when you can't get a Mosin! : )

You can still get a sniper version, but they are pricey...
http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?groupid=679 &name=Russian+1891%2f30+PU+7.62x54R+Mosin+Nagant+S nipers

Even the Nagant revolvers are sold out... Interesting design on the thing with the cylinder moving to seal into the barrel, and it uses odd bullets.

The Russians sure make some quirky handguns.

No. It just goes to show that in times of need, which items have value. And, what to invest in...

Just makes me want to stockpile more.

Money is rapidly becoming worthless...
Ammo, is rapidly becoming priceless...

Dang, it looks like I've been watching to many episodes of "Doomsday Prepper's"!

Just got back from the local range. Ammo was coming off the truck as we were leaving. The ONLY stuff coming in was 9mm hollow point, 45 ACP hollow point, and 22lr. Nothing I'm not well stocked on at the moment, so no buying on my part.

There was a guy shooting off some .223 next to me though. I asked if he was going to keep his brass. He said go for it. At least I added to my small stock of .223 brass on the cheap.

It was actually kind of quite at the range today. I'm not sure if it was because people are out of ammo, or if it was because of the impending snowmageddon.

the prices on gunbroker are bids, not exactly what will be PAID for it
example - there were Michael Jackson CDs on ebay the day after he died going for thousands of dollar, doesn't mean someone truly paid for it though

^^^ So what is .015 cents (per round) when adjusted for inflation?

Hard not to wonder if the DHS bullet grab was done solely to keep it out of the publics' hands. No other logical reason

Well they need that ammo remember 105 rounds in that news paper delivery pickup They thought belonged to Chris Dorner 3 hits two in one ladies back the other hit was the drivers finger. 8 officers total round count is unknown as yet but reported as over 130. With that hit ratio why worry about the leos they cant hit the barn from inside with closed doors

From Precision Firearms:
We are finally moved into the new location and efficiently building and shipping product. A Special Thank-you to all customers that waited, and some that still are patiently waiting through all the moving, massive order volumes, and delays. We are asking all those that placed orders for anything prior to December 13, 2012 - Prior to, not including, the 13th to email us if you have not received your order yet. With the move and everything, we want to make sure no orders slipped though the cracks. We know there are some Grendel Uppers that have not shipped yet, but email us on those too. Send all emails on this to sales@pf15.com. We will repeat this for every 3-5 days about every week until we are caught up. Please help us help you, by waiting until the dates requested before asking for status updates.

Phone is being answered for about an hour or two each day. Please do not call to get status updates. This just delays everyone's orders as it takes us out of the shop and shipping areas to anwer them. A quick time study done here shows that we can build 2 rifles and 4 uppers more each day if we dont answer status update questions. I know it seems harsh and you have been waiting and we value your business, but help us, help you! It is almost 11 pm EST here and I am still at work. We are working 7 days a week, 18 hours a day. Just Last two business days, 50 + uppers and rifles shipped. We are making progress!

Ran across www.gunbot.net today. It's a web bot that scans various retailers and compiles a list of who's selling what for what price. Kind of a neat idea to keep an eye out for that hard to snag ammo, etc.

We were out and about today and decided to stop by Cabela's and another gun shop in that area. The gun shop is, I believe, the biggest in Illinois and usually well stocked. I was curious what things would be like though, as I haven't been out there for a couple months now. It seems the crowds are down at least considering it was a Sunday afternoon. It just looked busy like they normally would be for a Sunday. That was nice to see.

They even had some tactical guns on the wall, including some AR-15s. Much smaller selection than when I was actually shopping for my gun in December though. The hand gun cases were probably only at about 60% capacity though. They used to keep them fully stocked. It looked like they were short on almost every type of pistol/revolver.

Ammo selection was also very limited. They had .45 ACP HP. .38 and 357. were in stock. No 9mm at all. No .22LR either They had some 5.56 tracer rounds at only 50 cents a round. The Cabela's had their ammo section consolidated to about 1/4 the shelf space that they had a few months ago and much of that consisted of empty shelving. The only primers to be had were shotgun primers.

This leads me to question if the easing of the crowds is because demand has passed it's peak, or if the lack of supply has just caused people to stop looking. We are living in interesting times.

Saturday I picked up a Linberta semi auto 12 ga at Buds gun shop. Took it and the Mosin out to the farm today and went through a few boxes of ammo. The Linberta operated flawlessly even wasting 5 rounds quick as I could pull the trigger. Gun seems really well built with ghost sight and all. For $400 + tax out the door I thought it was a pretty good deal. Picked up 100 rounds for $25 at wally world. Now I need to start looking for a safe.

So, if he purchases the guy to give to someone else, that would be a illegal straw purchase....right? even though he would be giving it to the police.

Edit: Found the ATF text. Purchasing for a "gift" is legal.
From atf-p-5300-4.pdf
Where a person purchases a firearm
with the intent of making a gift of the
firearm to another person, the person
making the purchase is indeed the true
purchaser. There is no straw purchaser
in these instances. In the above example,
if Mr. Jones had bought a firearm
with his own money to give to Mr. Smith
as a birthday present, Mr. Jones could
lawfully have completed Form 4473.
The use of gift certificates would also
not fall within the category of straw purchases.
The person redeeming the gift
certificate would be the actual purchaser
of the firearm and would be properly
reflected as such in the dealer's records.

Somehow, I have real serious doubts that he has bought a single gun (while buying another gun, BTW), to turn in to the police. Sounds more like a poorly thought out cover story when he got outed to me.
