I need a new laptop. computer that is and dang it under the other a PC or a Macintosh. I am used to having a qwerty keyboard under my fingertips... Best advice phleeeze... I want to run you bun 2 or Macintosh I want to avoid windows as an OS. I am hoping for for a pm from frogs. | ||

You might want to put the bottle down before you post again! Ubuntu? You might as well show up to a track day on a bicycle! Anyway, what kind of budget are you looking at? Also, what do you use it for? Any specific application or game requirements? That way I can look around and make recommendations. Oh, and Windows 8 is freaking awesome, once you get used to the changes you will never want to use 7, OSX or Linux again!  | ||

Frogs- I don't need anything fancy at all, mainly I just use it for word processing, photo/vid and piddling on the Internet...actually never do any video games either. not planning on spending a whole lot of money, hopefully less than $300. I'd prefer an OS that's bugproof, never much trusted Windows for that reason. Linux/open source seems more secure, and Mac, but I'd prefer not to blow that much $$$. | ||

Voice recognition is far from perfect but every day it does get better. The transcription part of Windows 7 works pretty good, and better after doing a "training", but I still don't recommend it for doing anything other than commands like starting a program. It blows away what we had 10 years ago, where your accent would make it have a hard time trying to figure out if you said bacon or beer can.
Once you get the hang of the new start menu, and other cosmetic tweaks, the OS shines. At the core it still functions mostly like windows 7 but with lots of little tweaks and improvements. I need to cut this post short as I am at work, I'll finish the rest later, but start looking at Chromebooks, I'll type more later. | ||

You might get better and more painless photo / video editing on the Mac platform. Linux is a great server platform, but a headache for just desktop use unless you want a hobby. Windows gets better and better, 7 and up is a pretty nice desktop OS. | ||

Perhaps your dream computer isn't a computer at all? Over Christamas, I gave my wife a Samsung Galaxy 7.0 with android. It's like a huge phone. She loves it so much, she seldom uses her real computer. She even uses her work pc via citrix at home with it. It's pretty sweet for under $200. | ||

Honestly, 8 is the only one I prefer right now. 7 is good and a solid OS, I just like all the little things 8 added, including a new task manager, faster boot times and better power management. I work with OSX at my job, and I do have Ubuntu on one of my computers, but I do not like working with either of them. They are not "bad", they are just not for me and do not offer me anything better than I already do in Windows. Often times, Linux/Mac variants of Windows programs I use are lackluster, and the same can be said for other applications that compete with them. Everyone has different needs and uses, you probably will be fine with any OS as your needs are more generic than mine. On the mobile fronts I also use Android, iOS, WebOS, Maemo, Windows Mobile 6, and now my Windows 8 phone should be here this weekend. Each of the mobile OSes have their pluses and minuses, and none of them can currently replace a real desktop OS. They do compliment them well though.
Literally anything will do basic word processing and web surfing. Photo editing on the other hand, depending on what exactly you are doing may require beefier hardware for larger pictures, or a specific OS for a specific editor. On Linux, Gimp works OK as a photo editor. It is nowhere near as powerful as Photoshop, but you can't beat the price of Free. Same thing with Paint.Net on Windows, also Free, I'm not sure what is available for free on OSX. Any laptop will do what you want just fine, unless you are doing really complex things that require Photoshop, but in that case Photoshop alone would bring a cheap system to its knees.

It can or cannot be more secure, it mostly comes down to your usage. Linux does not have the same security issues Windows does, but it has its own issues instead. Linux tends to be more secure mostly because of how uncommon it is, so it is not directly targeted. It is like having a Honda Civic and a Chevy Cobalt sitting next to each other in the lot. Both cars can be stolen, both are worth about the same, but the Civic is at a higher risk because it is more desirable for chop shops to part out. Windows is more desirable to attack because it makes up 90% of the market share. Because Windows vulnerabilities will not work on Linux, you are safer in that regard. One of the main reasons that Linux tends to be more secure is because of how it handles user accounts. By default on Linux, your primary account does not have what is called Root or Admin access, so it is limited in what it can do. If you need to do something that may harm the system, like install a new program, delete a system file, or something else that isn't a normal day to day operation, you will be prompted for the credentials of an account with those rights. Doing it this way severely limits the damage that can be done to the computer and reduces the spread of Malware. Windows can do this too, but it is not the default configuration. On Windows you by default are an Administrator, so you can go and delete the Windows folder, run programs that want to take over your computer, and so on. Windows 2000/XP lets you make user accounts without these rights (standard accounts), but when you needed to do something like installing a program, it was cumbersome and often required logging out and then back in as the Admin. Starting with Vista, you can run a standard account, then when go to start a task that requires Admin privileges, it will pop up a box for the credentials, just like Linux does. If you do run Windows, this is how I recommend you run it, as this alone defeats 86% of Windows security vulnerabilities.
I agree with this. Ubuntu has come a long way, but it still falls short in the "it simply works" department that OSX and Windows shine in. OSX will be out of your price range, so if anything a laptop that dual boots Win7 and Linux would probably be ideal for you. One thing I mentioned before was a Chromebook, these are a new series of laptops that run a custom Google OS based on the Chrome browser, and it uses special plugins as applications. I've only briefly played with it, it does appear to have great potential, but it would severely limit what you can do with it. Good news is, they are dirt cheap. Finally spent a little $$$ and got a NEW computer, for the first time in my life! WOOHOO!!! Who's got any insight into this new Windo'hs 8 OS? Besides Frogs, that is- just sent a PM to his pond. | ||
