This is kinda cool. When I was real young (late 60s) my Dad always told me about all the cool-stuff his Dad did. I didn't understand at the time, but it was "Pretty cool" I have alot of kinda insider info and photos. My Grandfather was part of this and on one of the ships watching as a engineer who worked to set this up. My Dad gave me the watch he wore on this day, but my room-mate stole it.Maybe in the long run he saved my arm (or life) Radiation anyone?
Very high res pic of the world's first underwater nuclear test. See that black spot on the right side of the water column? Thats the 560 foot USS Arkansas lifted vertically out of the water.

The details of what happened on those ships when they looked at them after made a tornado putting a 2x4 thru a brick wall seem pretty lame. lots of unwilling "passengers" also..

My wife's grandfather (still alive at 90) worked on the Manhattan project out of Oak Ridge, TN. Was just visiting him and he took us to a museum that went over the history of what took place there. He told us stories of what he did for it. Amazing stuff.

Sunny travelled to Bikini for 10 days of technical diving in the atoll. This included dives on the Nagato (Yamamoto's command battleship for Pearl harbor) the Arkansas, Saratoga and others. Should be on EVERY diver's bucket list!

Very cool.

Question- if you know the bastard stole your watch, why didn't you get it back? I'm certain you wouldn't need to have worried about picking up radiation from it. If the watch had received enough radiation to become radioactive your granddad would have dropped dead on the spot. It would be a pretty cool thing to have.

Baker Shot, I believe. The Nevada was in there as well, and didn't sink!. I knew a guy that was a hard hat diver given the task of damage assessment. They suspended him above the bottom to avoid dragging him through the radioactive silt...
The funniest story:
There was a ship that wasn't too badly damaged, and was used as a staging vessel afterwards. There were "hot" spots in various places, one of which was at the top of the gangway, a place where people had a tendency to stop and talk. The spot was outlined in chalk, and they posted a guard by it to keep people moving. (you can see where this is going?) My friend came aboard, and started to chat with the guard:
"You can't stop here, this is a hot zone."
"How do you know?"
"They measured it and put this chalk circle around it."
"So why can you stand here?"
"I'm outside the chalk marks."
"I didn't know radiation stopped at chalk marks..."

:-)

Yep. And masking tape is an absolute barrier against sailors. Ships are strange places.

I saw a documentary on that test and in it some sailors that were present saw rocks fall from the sky after the blast.
Most naturally thought it was a cool souvenir and popped it in their pockets.
Those rocks were VERY hot. Massive tissue damage forced many to lose limbs and even die from those stupid little rocks.

I like the way the palm trees are marked in the photo. I'd bet the initial shock wave and wind blast had them moving and shaking! I wonder if they placed any sunbathing beach dummys on blankets along the shore line.Remember SPF 50!

I'm probably thinking of something else, but I thought they had unoccupied condemned ships anchored near Ground (?) Zero.

They had all sorts of livestock penned in and anesthetized on the decks. They sheared the sheep to check flash-burn and radiation burn effects. Not a pretty video - but if you have Netflix check out Radio Bikini...

About 4:21 they mention the animals

If you can check out Radio Bikini - it'll be worth the watching.

Just saw Radio Bikini. Very good, and it's available on streaming Netflix.
