For those of you who are local, you know what's coming. However, a few of you folks are quite a ways off; so I've decided to let everybody know what we're in for. There are Blizzard warnings in effect for Friday and Saturday. At the height of the storm, snow will be falling at the rate of 3 inches per hour; and winds will be at Gale Force levels. Accumulations are predicted to be as high as two feet. Ain't it fun living in New England? Anyway, here are a few photos to give everyone a sense of what to expect, and how I personally feel about it. Two feet of Snow:

Well, we're getting what they predicted. It was snowing at a rate of 4" per hour for a while during the night with winds hitting hurricane force. The wind blew the snow right through the screens on my south and east facing windows, and I can barely see outside The Boston news is saying that accumulations here are over two feet, and there are still several hours before the storm moves away. There was one reporter down on Cape Cod who was leaning sideways into the wind at almost a 45 degree angle. The Governor declared a State of Emergency, and if you're caught driving it'll cost you $500.00. The news also stated that the Governor of Connecticut closed all roads in that state. The only vehicles out are Plows, Emergency services and News Personnel. I'm itching to get out and start shoveling and running the snow blower, but it would be wasted effort. The wind would just blow snow right back; so I'll just have to wait a few hours. The Coast is getting hammered with waves up to 30 Feet, and they're expecting major flooding in some coastal locations at the High Tide which is around 10:00 this morning. I think that this is going to be one of the top 5 storms for snow accumulation; but I don't think it'll pass the Blizzard of '78. All in all, it's a classic Nor'Easter. |

What the hell is all this white stuff? They say we got three feet in this area. I'm sitting here with a coffee trying to figure out how to get out of the house because every door has that much snow or more piled against it. Won't do much good to clear the driveway yet anyhow since the plows have not been down my street. Can't go anywhere if I wanted to. Besides that, my snowblower broke last night when I was making an early pass. I hope it's just the shear pin, I don't want to shovel all this by hand. Crusty, it's pretty much stopped here except for the wind blowing stuff around. You should see things clear up pretty soon. Got a cover on the Uly and the carport kept most of the snow away from it. Looks like it might stay there for a few days. |

11:00 AM Update: I went out and cleared my driveway, walks and front & rear entranceways. Measured in the middle of my driveway with a Tape measure, I had 28 inches of snow. The windrow from the plows was roughly 6 feet high (I didn't measure it). Although I'm Legally responsible to clear the sidewalk, the snow is over 4 feet deep, and my snow blower is just a dinky little 5 horse Craftsman that has trouble if the snow is more than 18" deep (Actually, it has trouble if it has to clear any snow). I'll wait and let the City Sidewalk Plow clear it. All in all, a driveway that's two cars wide and one car deep along with maybe 20 feet of walks that are 3 feet wide took me three hours to clear. Now, I'm enjoying a hot cup of coffee and contemplating what to have for Lunch. Ah; Winter in New England! |

Things to do when it snows... I tossed a 10 pound pork shoulder on the smoker about 5:30 this morning!
Of course we just have a couple inches if icy crap. Hope you all get dug out soon and still have power. We may not hear from Court again until 2014! |

It's amazing what almost 18 hours on the smoker can do for a pork shoulder. I left it outside in a big ceramic pot overnight, then shredded it this morning. It was still slightly warm! I hope the rest of you can make the best of the storm.

I think lunch is all day! I think it's best with just a touch of BBQ sauce. I need to find something better for it than the typical sweet supermarket sauce. We're warming up with rain forecast. Our ice should be melted away shortly. I feel bad for those out east who are trying to figure out where to stack it. |

I, too, was living in Cambridge for the blizzard of 1978. It was the last 2 weeks of nursing school and one week of school was canceled. It was a blast. Had so much fun. The whole city was closed down. I'm just glad I don't live there anymore. We can get snow storms like that here in Colo (up slopes) but it's been a very pleasant year so far. My hubby and I have put on over 500 miles on our dual sports since Dec 1. Hope all gets cleaned up quickly, and be safe. |

Rochester got about 18-20 inches, this week, depending wildly on location. Lake effect snow dominates the local patterns. South side of Rochester got about 16 inches dropping off to about a foot in the southern suburbs. 30 inches in snow bands nearer the lake. Not that bad, and not too many power failures, the usual car crashes, the typical places and reasons. ( we're sorta used to this ) Some years ago, Rochester NY shut down for a "storm of the century" bearing down on us. Everyone hunkered down for the "big one". It missed. My buddy rode his snowmobile clear downtown from the suburbs on a sunny, pleasant day with no traffic or issues. He said it was like some post apocalyptic movie. Ever since then it's nigh impossible to get big employers to shut down before a storm hammers the area. Schools and small businesses will preemptively close up, but not the few major corps or government offices. I've actually been sent out to work after blitzing my way into work through serious blizzard conditions. ( I was running a Dodge Van with studded snows that did quite well in crap conditions... but it was set up for mountain Hang gliding expeditions, with full emergency gear including stove, bedding, tow straps, and winch ) Upon arrival, I told the Supervisor that only an idiot would drive out there... and here I was. I was told the Postmaster ( who was home ) insisted we do the job, so I warmed up the 2-ton Collection truck, drove to the entrance of the parking roofed area ( no walls just a 2 acre carport ) and promptly slammed to a stop in the snowdrift at the entrance. ( needless to say I got unstuck from the 4 foot drift, parked and went home after another half hour of sit com dialog with management. ) |

Well I finally got the driveway cleared before dark. Unfortunately, it dead ends at a three foot snowbank since the plows still haven't come down my street. If they don't make it overnight looks like I'll be taking a vacation day tomorrow. Hate to waste them like that. |

Don't feel too bad; you're not alone. I was watching the news tonight, and about half the City of Boston is in the same boat. I'm fortunate; I live on a busy street that gets a lot of traffic, so it gets plowed well. I'll probably be out on my bike tomorrow. (Message edited by Crusty on February 10, 2013) |

Gee whiz Crusty what's the big deal? Where I grew up in the Midwest if you didn't get a two or three foot snow storm every couple of years the weather was considered odd. When my ex and I lived in your neck of the woods (ironically on Winter Street in Fitchburg) someone asked what we thought of, "These harsh New England winters". We looked at each other and laughed. Greg more people live in 20 square miles of my home then some entire midwestern states population, that's the problem there is to many people that have to get to work and there is no where to put the snow. My taxes and anyone in Conn. or NY are so high we pay more for a mailbox then some people pay for an acre.I pay with sewers $6500 a year for a lot 118'x78' and a 1200 sqr foot 55 year old house. Thats near $130 a week for the right to pay my mortgage and I am in the cheapest county in NJ.We HAVE to get to work add to that most of us lost weeks of pay through Sandy and the need to get to work is double and tripled. Start to see the problem. |

It's a sure sign of too much government intrusion into our lives when virtually everything is seen through a political spectrum. Government is the problem, not the solution. |

Hey, Chicago changed Mayor's over snow removal once. Also around here, it's surprising how much snow removal is being done by private contractors. Some governments are realizing that they can make the public's money go farther by paying private companies to do the job. I know you didn't mean it to be, but your statement is pretty spot on. |
