For concealed carry, I like the rounded butt version. Some people don't like the Kimbers, Not sure why. I see used ones a lot locally, I assume it's a concealment issue.

As a heavy set ( fat ) guy, it's hard to hide a gun that large. Clothing, of course makes the difference, but a 1911, even tha Commander size I prefer, is a bit big ( and heavy ) for most people to actually carry.

An all steel, 5" 1911 conceals well with the right holster, a sturdy belt, and a long shirt.

Not many people these days have an inclination or the dedication to carrying full sized pistols these days.

Score!

300 rounds of brass, $100. It's TulAmmo, but made in Italy, which is supposedly by Fiochi but I haven't found any solid proof on it yet. Either way, for only $.30 per pull, it's worth at least shooting some of it. My girls said the walmart they work at was wiped out (in less than 15 minutes) of all the ammo that came in tonight, they missed getting .22LR though.

I also got the Peltor 6s tactical muffs today since it was my B-day. : )

Just a story to share.
Years ago,I bought a Remington Rand/RMT 1911 in a cigar box........pile of junk.$80.00 I think.Steel slide, aluminum frame and lousy condition. I got it assembled and it works fine with hardball and can sorta hit a pie plate at 50 feet..."most" of the time.It became known as"The tin cup" at the club..opposite of a Gold cup.
A buddy was all giddy about getting a Thomson 1911 and fixing it up as a cheap entry level combat competition gun."Cheap" being the key word here. I ordered two,one for him,one for me. When it came in,I took my Tin cup and spray painted it flat black and put the Thompson grips on it...and them put it back in the package and taped it back up.
Called the buddy and told him his cheap 1911 was in. I let him open the shipping package and muttering that is was probably going to be a piece of crap. He took it out of the box and was kinda impressed at first look. Jacked the clunky slide and the look on his face was PRICELESS. It was about 15 seconds of "WTF did I buy" till he read the slide markings.....
We swapped out the grips to "his" gun and he did end up with a fine 1911. Hard chromed it,mag well, trigger and hammer...we had a lot of fun at the matches with those Thompson's.

I'm still looking enviously at all your toys, I know there are "ways" of getting whatever one wants if you're prepared to pay for it.

The major problem here is that the only readily available shells are .22 LR, 12ga, 16ga, & .410 & you need to have a hunting licence to purchase.

I'd like to get hold of one of those 30 shot Keltec pistols but they're in .22 magnum & that's not easy to find.

Discretion is the keyword.

Question about magazines ...

Do you guys keep your magazines loaded? I am told that keeping them loaded will wear out the springs over time.

Also, is there a standard time frame for when springs should be replaced, if at all?

What good is a magazine if not loaded? Most good quality mags I've seen could use a little wear-in. They have more than enough spring force to sacrifice a little over time and still push that last round into action.

If you ever notice a problem, replace the spring. Too easy.

none of my mags are loaded, (but the grab pistola). i think they say rotate the loaded one every month, replace the spring once a year. if you keep it loaded full the whole time. piece of mind i guess.

i've never replaced a mag spring. but i leave em empty. and rotate the pistola mag

I've never seen any problem leaving them loaded.

Do beware of local laws though. Here in Ohio, I recently found out that a loaded magazine is considered a loaded weapon. So if you pre-load those AR or AK magazines before you go to the range, you could arguably be charged with having a loaded weapon in your vehicle, which in Ohio is illegal unless you have a concealed carry permit.

a dude at the range told me it's law, concealed carry or not, that you can not have a loaded rifle or rifle mag in the veh.... haven't looked into that though. which sucks cause my last ar assemble was so i could have it ready in veh : (

just called the sheriff. you can not have a loaded mag or rifle mag in the veh even if you have carry permit. carry only applies to pistol. all others are per reg law. bullets here, gun there, mags in there etc. damn

Nuke, thanks for the feedback. I have been keeping mine unloaded except for one mag of Hornady Critical Defense rounds and I have been rotating the mags. The same thing with the pistol I keep in the bedside stand.

I'll just keep doing what I am doing and not worry about the springs.

Huh. I had no idea that in Ohio there was a distinction between rifle and pistol magazines. They didn't cover this (completely anyway) in the CCW class I took.

Geesh. It's really easy to run afoul of the law just taking the kids out to the range to shoot some tin cans...

From a friend in Cleveland:

"It's true -- but only for another month or so.

CHL holders can carry loaded pistol magazines. But rifle/carbine magazines are considered loaded weapons.

Yes, it's asinine.

But Ohio HB 495 will allow the carriage of loaded rifle magazines -- I think in April."

Is keeping four mags for the pistol overkill?

is keeping six mags for the mini overkill?

I do keep two mags for the mini unloaded for range trips.

and yes, this weekend is shopping time. Lookin for a new rifle to add to the safe.

RE: leaving magazines loaded.

Generally a bad idea. The spring will sack and the gun will jam. How long? weeks to months. Then again, modern AR silicon steel springs can take that for a year, no problem. That's aftermarket springs. Not the ones in the vietnam era surplus mag you got at the gun show.

One rule of thumb is to only leave a mag loaded for a month or so, and use it at the range. Have enough extras so you can cycle them.

That runs aground on the no loaded magazine laws.

Solution, buy a LULA. Saves on the thumb, and lets you unload a mag in seconds. ( and load effortlessly and far faster than manually )

re: extra mags...

Heck no.... 4 mags for a pistol is rational. If you keep 2 loaded for carry cycle them with the unloaded ones at the range and you are covered on wear and tear. These are mechanical objects in a real world, they break, get dinged, stepped on and run over. ( you do practice, right? )

6 magazines for a carbine is just as rational. Only a bozo who shoots "skeet" holding the barrel and taking the recoil on the collarbone would think otherwise. Same system, use the loaded mags, and swap them around. ( keeping legal may mean unloading for transport )

Most importantly, if you use the magazine that has been loaded for weeks, and it works, you are happy. If it malfs, fix it, and buy the good springs. ( and anti tip follower, while you are at it. can't go wrong with magpul )

Rick a, how well you can conceal a large weapon has a lot to do with build. I'm chunky, so hawaiian shirts and such tentage are a must for belt carry. Tall skinny guys like Clint Eastwood, wearing a properly tailored suit can carry an N frame S&W in a shoulder rig. Me, not so much.

And in NY concealed means no one can see it or you get trouble. Some crazy lady at a diner catches a glimpse as you sit down and next thing you know armed men with drawn guns are accusing you of brandishing. ( a crime in NY ) And there's always a crazy lady in NY.

That's why I consider a Commander sized gun near maximum, for ME. YMMV. Normal for me carry is more like a baby Glock and a pocket holster with khakis. I'm seriously considering the Ruger LC9, it prints less than the Glocks.

Also in NY the 7 round limit makes tiny a rational choice. No need for a gun that can carry 17 rounds in a free state.

The 1911, while large, is relatively thin and flat. I wear a tight tee with a looser, longer shirt over it.

I used to be a NY resident and carried my 1911 daily.

Admittedly, having been in FL for a while, I finally decided to get something smaller for summer carry, a S&W J frame .38.

Most modern springs after taking a set, will not be worn by being loaded. Most wear occurs through use (being cycled through it's travel).

I've had the same springs in my mags for over a decade in some guns, with no issues.

Ohio guys; Kasich signed into law shortly after democrats pimped the sandy hook trajedy, HB495 which fixes the definition of "loaded weapon" and makes it easier to renew ccw licenses. It will be law soon.
