I had one, a 2002. If you are prepared to deal with their "character flaws", they are great bikes. I wouldn't pass one up if I came across another. |

I'd snatch the sellers arm off at that price. |

Stupidly simple working on em. I'd tear the motor down to look at the bore and valve train JUST on general principles. Heck for $2K I'd consider flying out to buy it and spend a weekend doing the top end and riding it back to CA. Love my 01 S3. I have never ridden it really hard - only has about 45K miles on it but it's tight and sweet running. Snag it before one of US takes it away. |

The ONLY thing I'd consider doing is a couple pulls on a dyno with a sniffer make sure you're not puling lean anywhere. Even if it "feels" good, it can be lean. Don't want holes in pistons on your first hot day! |

What carb' has it been converted to? If it's a Keihin, what Ken said, with the addition of opening out the air bleed hole in the slide a little. If it's a Mikuni there's a lot more choices of jets & needles. If you want to check how the thing has been running, take a 5/8" ring spanner with you & whip out the plugs, ideally they should be a biscuit colour, if a pale-sandy shade it's been running lean, if dark-black too rich. It's not short-term critical likely to explode if it's lean, but you're buying an unknown quantity. The other job to do asap is to install the upgraded oil pump drive. And I do mean ASAP. Plenty of info on this in the KV & Old School sections. |
