I've always been interested, but the detectors(cheap)that I have played with were hard to use.Any recommendations for a higher end one that's user friendly. Probably won't buy new,but find the same thing used on eBay or craigs. |

Or witching sticks? My dad gave my cousin a couple of bent clothes hangers and told him to walk around on the farm till he found something. HE FOUND a long abandoned water line at the chicken house. I have those very hangers and have not found a damned thing. Just gotta wonder....../ |

Dousing is a psychic phenom. I can give you multiple reasons why it's BS superstition, but it works, for some people. So it's not science. ( not repeatable by experiment ) Best theory is that subconcious cues are acted upon by the douser to tell him when to move the rods. ( which he does without "knowing" he does ) But that has diddle to do with metal detectors. Since it's a subject I know diddle about... I used google. maybe these guys know something. http://metaldetectingworld.com/ |

I don't know anything about what makes one detector better than the next, but I am curious what you plan to use it for. I once talked to a guy sweeping the beach on Maui. He said he would find some interesting things, and some with value. I think people use them to find meteorites too. They can be high value little rocks! |

Mostly exploring the underground of long gone building sites..and arrows in my back yard.... when they slip under the grass and completely disappear. Occasionally, somebody dropped or lost something of value and the detector I borrowed was pretty much hopeless to tune..but it did eventually find a wedding band that the neighbors wife threw out the front door. |

Does anyplace rent metal detectors? My wife's family has a farm with a house built pre-civil war and as far as I know has never been searched. I don't need one personally but would like to have one for a few days just to walk the property. |

Try craigs list for a cheapie or one that is just taking up space and needs to go. I've seen them in the 35 to 75 dollar range. After looking at Aesquire's link,I read half the day, questioned some eBayers and ended up with a nice Fischer F2 (guaranteed)from a long time hunter that was upgrading(100% feedback). Has the big DD coil,8" coil and a 4" coil. Two 9V batteries will last about 20 hours. I'm guessing about $500.00 worth for $180.00. I'm happy and good enuf for entry level, which is probably all the farther I will go. Now I just need to wait for mushroom hunting season and take the detector along with to "Blackhawks gold". Legend has it, that this huge boulder in the woods had a chest of gold under it that the Indians robbed from the stagecoach line that went thru the area. They undermined the boulder to fall over on the chest to keep it hidden. In the early 1900's,locals star drilled holes in it to blast it away. Chunks laying all over, but it was too big and they gave up. I always wanted to make a 10'x1" auger bit for an ice auger and poke a few holes and see what comes out in the tailings.......like wood or gold (LOL). Nothing is probably there but Dad and friends played on that boulder a lot in the 1920's....could be stuff they or the blasters lost around that boulder that could be found. "That legend" probably dies with me as the boulder is far off the trail and hard to find. I'm the only able bodied soul left that knows about it....as far as I know. |
