Colt SP901 looks very interesting. Easy tool-less conversions between .308 and .223/5.56mm

Anyone have any experience with one?

I stopped by a new gun shop nearby yesterday. They had a pretty straight forward AR-15 on the wall. It had a couple of upgrades on it, Yankee Hill Machine quad rail (not floating), forward vertical grip, and a Trijicon ACOG 4x32 ACOG battery powered optics. Their price was $1,199. I did some looking online and see the Trijicon ACOG selling for around $1,200! They say this is a price they are planning on keeping for the foreseeable future. I've got to sell something before jumping in, but this seems like a great price.

Has anyone ever sold anything on Gunbroker.com? From what I can tell you don't need an FFL to sell something, you just need to ship to the buyer's FFL. Anyone have experience with this?

I actually just bought a couple things on Gunbroker, but I haven't sold any.

As I understand it, you can sell anything, but only an FFL can receive it.

Gunbroker has deals that are far and beyond what I can get locally, not even including tax.

Colt SP901
Looks interesting. Especially the .308 version.
I've had no experience with that particular model but used plenty of Colt ARs both in and out of the military.
Good weapons.
The only comment I have was that, even after years of using them, the pistol grip/magazine configuration still made them feel awkward to carry at a ready position. But maybe that's just me.

Thanks D_V, that's my understanding. I've had good luck purchasing there. Time to sell something.

Check your local laws. If you have open carry you could. I don't think I would though.

When I carry a rifle on my Cyclone I keep it in a hard case and strap it on me. ( on other bikes in the past I've carried them on rear racks seriously bungeed down. )

I had an old back pack book bag that had no bottom, and slid the case into/through the bag and tied it to the bag so it rested on the seat behind me, vertical, to take the weight off. Alas, that got loaned out and never returned.. ( "oh, yeah, I loaned it to dave" ) but I didn't make a big deal out of it because it was a beat & torn old pack.. I'll pick up a proper carry pack from Midway USA sometime.

Usually it's a mini wagon full of gear going to the range. A box with targets, muffs, spare earplugs, tape, bench bags and cleaning kit. Ammo cans, gun cases, and a blanket over the whole mess.

Technically, I'm in violation in New York, since the Gun is to be locked in the trunk for transport.... but I have no such trunk in a wagon. Or the Van. Or the Buell, come to think of it.

Similar issue here with my van. No trunk to lock things in. I always put a tiny padlock on the gym bag I use for my guns. As I understand it, that meets the "locked" requirement. Then the bag goes way in the back.

Sifo you should look that Trijicon over and make sure it's not a knock off or fake for that price....IIRC they don't make a battery powered anything, it's all Tritium powered.

The Trijicon is new and on their website. http://www.trijicon.com/na_en/products/product3.ph p?pid=TA02

Retail is $1,433. Looks just like what was on the rifle. I'm wondering if Trijicon makes deals with manufacturers at great prices. I have to admit, I'm trying to see where this deal isn't so great. The AR-15 comes from a TN manufacturer called Predator Custom Shop. They said they got some special pricing by committing to a certain volume for the year on a certain spec build. I'm guessing that the volume deals go up the chain to Trijicon and Yankee Hill Machine. I was actually very surprised with the feel of the trigger too. It's a single stage, but had a great feel.

Blake, that Colt is the New Toy. Just read a review, haven't fondled one. Website claims compatibility with any mil spec "colt" upper.

It's all a trade off. The '901 is more versatile, at the expense of weight.
Could be a good trade off.

I'm all for the ambidextrous controls, though the controls for bolt & mag release stick out more than I like. But's that's very personal preference, I don't have an issue with the current controls, but also don't shoot with heavy gloves. I'm concerned with activating high profile controls by brushing up against the Universe, I'm clumsy that way. ( have the same 'tude on safeties like them big enough to push but no bigger. I've seen several 1911's in holsters with the safety brushed off. )

Is it worth the expense?

With a 5.56 Chassis you can shoot everything from a .204 Ruger, ( a Ruger/Hornady design for a ubersonic 4000+fps varmint laser grenade ) to .50 Beowulf. ( Alexander Arms's Bear/boar/barricade monster. It's like a water pipe sticking out of the handguard! )

Several of the in between rounds, like 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, .300 Whisper/blackout, .450 Bushmaster, don't suck either. All are fairly new.

With the 7.62 chassis, fewer alternative cartridges have been recently developed, but there's a half century of .308 wildcats to chose from, many far more common calibers. It's unlikely to get 6.5 anything at a walmart. .243 Winchester, 7mm-08, .308....you got a good shot.

A .243 in an AR-10 would make very mild shooting deer rifle for those who favor the round. ( but a bit heavy for the caliber's use as a classic "lady's deer rifle" )

If having the whole range of choices is worth the cost and mass your decision. It can be cheaper to have 2 guns, one on each chassis.

Hmmm.

We do have "open carry" here in Utah and I'm fairly sure Arizona also has it but in my experience you are just asking to be pulled over if you do it. Something about "reasonable suspicion". I also like the idea of concealed carry and have been doing so for over 20 years. Better to not let anybody know you are packing. Showing off IMHO just because you can invites trouble. For a .308 I like the Scar 17S "Heavy." It's actually the lightest of such rifles, and is quite accurate for a gun with a relatively thin barrel.

We had a Colt 901 at the shop briefly. I literally didn't even get to look at it before it sold.

Sifo, that's a new one on me...I guess Trijicon is trying to take a little of Aimpoint's market with a battery powered optic....odd, bonus that it's already magnified...no need for a separate magnifier

From a little looking it looks like these haven't been out for too long....hmm something else to add to my "would like to get my hands on" list lol

Here in Illinois, you can't carry like that and not get pulled over. In Indiana The long gun is not to be loaded during transport. I carried like that when I was a kid and going shooting in Indiana. Late 70s early 80s were another world. Illinois, all fire arms must be in a case, unloaded. In Illinois even bows are supposed to be secured.

As I understand it, that was the point of the link.

The supreme court just ruled the ban in IL as unconstitutional. They have 180 days to get in line and come up with a CCW plan or it's pretty much carry what you want, when you want and where ever you want, they will not be able to stop you, make you put it away, go home, take it from you or anything else. Both open and concealed carry will be allowed with NO restrictions if they do nothing.
