While cleaning out some stuff in the garage I came upon a set of Thunderstorm Heads, in the process of researching what they are worth now-days I stubbled across some thing interesting.. In the 2013 HD Genuine Motor Parts & Accessories catalog in the Screaming Eagle section they no longer list any performance heads for Sportster . In 2006 they listed Heads that were the same as Thunderstorm and also Heads that were the same as XB as options. I also remember at one point HD sold the Lightening Heads as Screaming Eagle. My question is why are they not selling these options anymore, is it the piss poor gas with 10% alcohol (possibly soon to be 15%) , stupid HD management, the EPA or what???? And because these performance heads are no longer around what are they worth now-days???? |

EPA, I would guess. You used to be able to buy a bagger and have straight pipes installed in the dealer before you even drove it home. |

Wouldn't one reason possibly be, they aren't being produced any more? In 2007 the Sportster heads were changed, and since none of the old Buell are still being made, why put them in the P&A catalog? I could swear I saw some kind of heads for sale for Sportsters, can't remember the details, I think it said 2007 and later. Isn't that when Sporties went to fuel injection? I thought newer sportster had heads similar to the XB, which are better then thunderstorms. |

IIRC, the 07-up XL heads were basically Thunderstorm heads. The only XL to use XB heads was the XR1200 (along with XB cams, compression ratio, and tensioner pulley). |

All 1200 Sporsters from 2004 on used the XB style heads. They are just styled differently. The 883 of the same years still used the old H-D hemi chamber. I have a set of those H-D XB style heads. They're a little flashy looking, with highlighted cooling fins, but have the breathers already drilled. I always wondered why more people didn't use them for tuber conversions. |

Do new sportsters use the "beehive" springs and other Buell stuff? |

The only XL to use XB heads was the XR1200 (along with XB cams, compression ratio, and tensioner pulley). Even then they are not the same. The XR1200 heads have extra oil cooling passages that the XB heads didn't have, and I would imagine that if the Buell line had continued they would have adopted the same 'improved' oil cooled heads as the XR uses. The XR1200 tensioner pulley is very different to the Buell item although it does the same job. In typical H-D fashion it is also MUCH heavier of course |

So are the 2004 and later HD 1200cc Sportster heads a direct bolt on for older Buells???? |

I think they use a different front mount. Can get the correct one from NRHS |

I searched for "cylinder head" on the American Sport Bike site and had no results. Do you have a link? |

Rick, That USED to be true...But the mount NRHS sells now is different. They have a single mount for both XB an XL heads, with a slotted hole on one side. I don't think that is a good idea, but haven't seen any test data one way or the other to support that. |

ASW Racing (Aaron Wilson) makes them for us. The design is the same as before. Al |
