never heard of this. anyone do it? is it something i can do myself? long story short, i want to attach a can to a short barrel rifle to make it long enough to not have to register it as an sbr with batfe. one of the ways you can qualify for a permanent install is silver soldering. |

pretty much the same process as lead/tin solder. uses higher melt temps. requires same basic cleaning process and flux. that being said i'd recommend having a smith do it and if you don't have a pro do it then at least have one inspect the finished mod. |

well i may be scrapping the whole idea... having it on perm makes it hard to clean the barrel. not sure i want all that crap going in the can. just thought of that. |

Thread and put on a flash hider that is long enough to make it legal. |

Law sez you have to have PERMANENT attachment of any barrel extension so if you have a thread-on suppressor, the barrel itself has to be 16.25 (or whatever the latest legal minimum) to the end of the threads. That's why the silver-soldering on of the suppressor/flash hider. |

Wow that ar15.com link is pretty cool. I was going to suggest something much cruder/uglier: screw on flash hider and tack it with a welder. Nice to see what "the Right Way" is. That having been said, wouldn't it just be easier to use a slightly longer barrel? If you have to make it longer to avoid A.T.F.B.S., why not just have the longer barrel for more velocity and accuracy? |

well i talked to a guy that builds uppers at a gun show today. he said he's sell me a 11.5 upper for $325 and pin my can on for another $25! he recommended that over the silver solder. i said ok well what about cleaning the barrel? and all the junk getting in the can? he says don't clean it, & he doesn't clean his. hmmm? i've heard of that before like on the 'filthy 14' and stuff. far as the barrel goes i have longer barrel versions & was looking for short cqb type weapon that i would prob suppress anyhoo so this seemed like a good way to get around paying another tax stamp & waiting for what i hear now is at least a 10 month wait. |

If you are putting a legal can on it, Use a can that has a removable cap for cleaning, and still silver solder the main body to the barrel. Please, correct me if i'm wrong. |
