First Off: ATGATT. I walked away after running into the back of a minivan on hgwy 75 in Plano, TX. My ride is a 2005 XB12scg. No need to hash out the details except I wasn't looking where I should have been when the traffic slowed hard due to some guy needing to be off the freeway RIGHT NOW. So...All scoops on the left side are shattered, oil cooler mashed and spraying. Oil cooler bracketry on tubular engine cradle is mashed. Broken peg. Minor cosmetic damage to flyscreen and airbox cover.Headlight is not aimed right, but the fork looks straight, but since there is cosmetic damage to the fork, the gecko said they would opt for replacement. After a visit from the gecko, they said they couldn't complete the estimate on their own, and they want to have it taken to the local HD dealer for an estimate, with no obligation to complete the work. The ammo-can saddlebags and the sliders on the fork and swingarm prevented any damage to the frame, or swingarm. The cosmetic damage to the fork is from the bumper on the minivan. It rolls straight, but I can't tell what lurks beneath the surface right now. I suspect they will total it, and I am ok with that. I am wrestling with buying it back if they offer it, but don't know if I care to invest the time to rebuild it myself, or if I want to start over. A Uly or 1125CR would be nice... Thoughts? Thanks. |

Sorry about your crash, Jason. Glad you're OK. I'd suggest you start shopping now, both for another Buell and for parts to fix yours. That'll give you a good idea of how much money you're actually going to have to spend for either alternative ("new" Buell or fixing yours). You should also factor in the down time for being without a bike while you piece yours back together if you go that way. BTW- I have the tubular engine/oil cooler bracket for sale if you decide to go that route: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/21/ 697346.html?1353167654 |

ATGATT wins again! I hate to hear that you wrecked, but glad to hear you are OK. I keep telling my half helmet, vest wearing, Harley riding son ATGATT is a good idea.....talking to a life style follower...... |

Look closely at the front and rear heads where they mount to the frame. They can crack on an impact, and not finish breaking for a long time. |

If you're still in the Plano TX area, let me know if there's anything I can do/help you with. Good luck & glad to hear you walked away from it. |

All's well that ends well. Glad to know that you're generally OK. Do the homework, and the math, and see if you can recover the most that you can. My good buddy claimed the corpse of his old XB, has wild ideas about reproducing the turbo XB that almost saw production... Insurance allowed him a beautiful new XB12SS, cherry... Do post up and update us. |

Glad you mitigated your own risk and walked away! Too many have not. |

Thanks all for the advice and input. Yes I am still here in TX...I guess i need to update my profile. The bike was delivered to HD of Dallas in Allen today, we shall see what they think it will cost to repair. Then the decision can be made. |

Update: Not much of an update. The HD shop has had it for 5 days, no estimate yet. I will be calling again tomorrow. |

Yep, something about 7 years. I dumped mine in July, single vehicle incident; all on me. Man those crash parts are expensive!!!! |

When my wife crashed our '99 X1 we worried it would be totalled. We didn't want a "salvage title" either. We had the parts manual and i itemised EVERY part that was damaged. We could have gotten a frame replacement with original VIN tag for $2500. GMD Computrack stated $800 to straighten the stripped frame. When i met with "FLO" he admired my itemised parts list complete with part numbers. He had the COMPLETE parts list with costs too.He asked me if i was sure the forks needed replacement ( i had coaching from a MOST cool HD dealer/owner) so i countered IF the adjuster would be willing to pay the labor to disassemble the forks for inspection.NOPE.Cut me a check on the spot and even added a labor rate of $55/hr to perform the repairs. The adjuster gave me the amount w/in a dollar of totalling the bike (some $3800).Years later the bike still runs/rides GREAT! |

I thought I went over mine with a fine toothed comb and found everything. 4 months later some major damage (destroyed rear head) surfaced. Absolutely NO symptoms in the meantime. The insurance company will try and total it if possible. It's nearly always cheaper than fixing it (and re-fixing it) just because labor is so expensive. Think about it... used parts attached to a used replacement bike are cheaper than new parts, and you don't need to pay labor to install them. Just total the bike out for "used" market value. Between the price bump for new parts versus used parts, and the labor to install, it doesn't take much damage to "total the bike". I bought mine back salvage title, and thought I was getting an exceptionally good deal. After all the work was done and the headaches all chased down, I feel like I got a sort of fair deal, kinda, if you don't count a lot of my labor... The insurance companies know what they are doing... |

Gecko called yesterday estimate from dealer is over $5k, he needs to "speak with them" before he finalizes. Nothing in writing yet, but if that number sticks, it will be a total. He did agree with me that the dealer wasn't all that thrilled to be working on a Buell. I chock it up to having an out of production bike with no chrome do-dads on it in their shop. Not the kind of profit they look for in a repair. More info as i get it. |

Final update. The Gecko totaled it. I got close to $5k after the deductible was subtracted. I am pleased. I'll pick something up next year, probably a Uly. The most entertaining bit was my visit to the dealer to get my special tail light lamp back. After asking me about the crash, a salesjerk asked me what I was going to get. I told him "nothing for a little while." He said "That's dumb" and proceeded to "give me some advice" and started yammering on about Harley inventory levels now and in the spring...like there will be some shortage of Harleys a few months from now. I just let him drone on for a while and said "I am going to get another Buell" He responded with "I don't want to talk to you then." And I replied "I know" and walked away. Come to think of it, maybe NOT having a Buell isn't so bad, if it means never talking to guys like that again. All in all though, with regard to the crash, things turned out really well. Thanks for all your support. |

Glad it's all sorted out. I'm in a similar position, been paid out & now just keeping an eye out for that smoking deal. Not in any hurry, just waiting for the little bells to start tinkling for "that one". |
