The EcoBoost engines are all about torque, not top end HP. Put that in a bike chassis and you would have a 125 HP XB12 kind of engine, only better. It's a triple! |

This is the car version. The motorcycle version will have minimum of 165 hp and be made of aluminum |

I wonder if this engine could be run without much in the way of electronics? |

I wonder if this engine could be run without much in the way of electronics? I expect it could but you'd never get the efficiency or power out of it that you're looking for. A 1.0 triple is nothing new in a car Daihatsu were doing it 30 years ago. Mid 80s there was a turbo diesel version too, I know of a few Minis that had the diesel drivetrain from a wrecked Charade shoehorned in. The Ford engine would be a useful base for a touring bike I'd think, but you'd need to design the bike around the lump. The problem with using a car engine in a bike is that the car engine is usually designed to have the transmission on one end & that creates space & weight problems. In the 80s BFG in France made a bike based around the Citroen GS engine 1300cc flat 4 air cooled, shaft drive, fuel tank under the seat. They were pretty advanced for their day but ugly as sin, dash from a Renault 5 TS or Alpine depending on Model, headlamp from a Renault 16. You see one now & again at bike shows here but they're pretty rare, only about 650 made. |

Grump, hence why I find the diesel concepts interesting that have been made thus far, but they are based on a car engine so it doesn't look like the whole package works. I would love a bike designed diesel engine at some point. Thinking ADv touring rig. |

My Smart has a 1000 cc triple made by Mitsubishi, and it makes 68 hp. I wonder if the Ecoboost would fit? |

Maybe not but a Gixxer lump will. http://www.smartuki.com/ Most Smarts here have the Mercedes 3 pot diesel. |

And for that, I'm envious. Mr. Penske thought that that wasn't worth it, hence the Mitsubishi |

It's a shame that Harley lacked the cajones to let Buell build the turbo XB9. Air cooled short stroke 989cc motor with a nice small turbo and clever electronics package... dang would that bike have looked, sounded, and ridden nicely. I was a lifelong turbo sceptic until I got my Saab 9-3. Now I don't want a car without one. |

No, you could not realistically do it without good electronics, think about boost and the transition between gears on a street bike. And yes, Reep Project Diablo was really something. I was really bummed when it got the axe because the numbers on some of the test powertrains would have been class leading, Just like NOVA, a great powertrain that got shelved. |
