Hey guys, Aside for riding my Cyclone I have also started racing legend cars. These little race cars get quite loud, we crank up these Yamaha 1200 engines over 10 grand with not much of a muffler. I am worried about my hearing, My hearing is already damaged from my younger years of loud concerts and clubs (tinitus). I have been wearing custom molded earbuds but I am afraid they may not be doing enough. We listen to a one way radio from race control. I've been looking for some sort of ear muff to wear under a helmet, however I havent seen something like this anywhere online. Can anyone offer any suggestions or links to anything. What are some of you doing to protect your hearing? |

I use standard foam earplugs. My favorite and best fitting are the tan colored plugs sold by Target stores. They tend to roll up better to allow proper insertion |

I guess what I am really looking for is some sort of ear muff I can wear with my ear buds underneath my helmet. |

I don't know whose earbuds you are currently using but Big Ear claims to have an external noise attenuation of 25-30 decibels. These plus a snug fitting helmet should give pretty good results. FWIW, I have a set of these and they're a bit pricey but well made. |

I use the 30db foam earplugs, or Shure brand ear blocking earbuds. The earbuds actually seem to block more noise. Plus, you could feed the radio into them at a low volume. |

It might be easier to go the other way - use regular foam ear plugs and add a speaker in the helmet for the radio. |

Here is a link to a website that offers a bunch of different isolation earbuds. Some of them are rated up to NRR 29 which is pretty good. Some aren't so expensive either $20-$50. http://www.earplugstore.com/isea.html |

There's nothing I've found available to consumers with a noise reduction rating ("NRR") of higher than 31 db. There are several brands of foam earplugs available with 31 rating. Find the one that fits you best, that may be as good as you can get, under a helmet. That's what I use. I drove a tank in the Army, so I have that tinnitus thing pretty bad too. "Tanker's Ear" is what they call it. |

I use military grade ear buds made by http://cep-usa.com/cep/special-applications. They are not to expensive and you can get many size and shape foam inserts. They have a very good sound attenuation. |

I knew an old guy that put a piece of furry sheep skin in each side of his helmet. |

I knew an old guy that put a piece of furry sheep skin in each side of his helmet. We don't really need to know about the habits of your friends. Was he of Welsh origin by any chance? |

Asphalt or dirt Cyclone? I had a Legends car in the late 90's. Took about 14 years off and started racing a Dwarf car with an 03 gsxr 750. Upgrading to an 06 engine next year probably since I cracked my engine case in the hard crash that ended my season a week early. Post a pic, here's my Dwarf car--

My Cousin owns a hearing aid business. She had me come in and she made a mold of my ears. She sent the molds out and when they returned she had me come in for fitment. Took about 10 minutes to make a couple adjustments. They are way better then any ear plug I've ever tried. |

Hey Badlionsfan, Cool car you have there. Ive got a Buell Cyclone along with my 34 Ford sedan legend car. The car has a 1200 Yamaha open motor. We race all over New England but as a rookie Ive stuck to New Hampshire Motor speedway for the time being. Best of luck racing! Eric
