Hey all youn's- I've posted many, many times here about music I've heard or goings-on involving my favorite radio station, WDVX- as of November 5, they've made it for 15 years! Over time, I've gotten to know most of the folks that run it, and if my radio is on, WDVX is what you'll hear. To me, and to scads of folks here and far, they're priceless- and, best of all, NON-commercial, truly, listener-supported! Over the almost 5 years I was at Smoky Mountain HD, they co-hosted many great shows at the dealership's concert venue, the Shed, and I saw most all of them! (FWIW, the Shed is about to kick off their winter/indoor show schedule, which gets better every year... http://www.smh-d.com/shed.php) I'm listening to the "Blue Plate Special", live from the downtown studio right now... www.wdvx.com is the link for any and all to listen via their 'puter- garonteed to brighten your day! Here's the Metropulse story: http://www.metropulse.com/news/2012/nov/07/radio-p ower-after-15-years-knoxvilles-wdvx-celebra/ |

Speaking of East TN music. Is the Valarium closing for good at the end of November? Stupid laws. (Message edited by gschuette on November 08, 2012) |

Going back a bit, the owner of the Valarium has owned more than a few clubs in downtown K-town... I spent many a night at several of them, and more or less know the history. I've been a Knoxvillain since 1990. The Valarium never much appealed to me- I've witnessed much better things going on all over downtown since then. The current online issue of the Metropulse addresses the situation as it seems, fairly well. If you head down this way, holler, and I'll try to show you around. |

Wow... ONE person here who can appreciate this. My buds at WDVX have an amazing story, and do amazing work, when most radio just plain SUCKS. I've gotten used to being ignored by the GF and the dog, but... "Et tu, Badwebbers?!" Oh well... Bump. |

Live streaming community radio, just my meat. Plus many of them archive shows to hear later, like Audrey Whitesides on KSFR in Santa Fe, after midnight Wednesday. Cab driver, VW Beetle owner, BMW w/sidecar pilot. Hear in St. Louis, KDHX is much like your Knoxville station. I catch it on weekends or in the shop on one of the stack of old Thinkpads w/ plug in speakers. I'll tune in to WDVX, look at the program schedule, fill my tooth for old time or old style variations. As a matter of no consequence to anyone but me, after live webcasting from the Bonneville Salt Flats for a few years, I've been giving thought to buying a good Low Power FM transmitter to play with, make FCC legal and do something old pirate radio style w/out being illegal. BUT, with these and other stations, it might just be seasonal. Thanks for the heads up on Knoxville, I'll tune in. As a cheap aside only interesting to me, a pro audio guy from Milwaukee brought an engine block down to take to the races in Utah and hand off to some Aussies. He told them I had the Library of Alexandria in early blues, and other mondo obscuro works when blues and early country overlapped, so when it was time to test a new computer for webcasting, it was easy to upload about 250 numbers and let it run overnight, getting sound checks from Norway to Broken Hill, New South Wales, Oz. Our government sent me to electronics school, NATTC, Millington, TN, specializing in navigation equip & radios. Which got me a First Phone and the opp to run stuff all over the place. New equipment makes it almost plug, play and walk away. Great fun. All verbal meandering aside, I'll stream it and enjoy. Thanks for the info. |

Glad to see someone appreciates it, Mox! "Library of Alexandria" for early blues, eh? Check out WDVX on Friday evenings for "Johnny Mack's Friday Night Blues Attack"... given I work evenings in a restaurant, that's one show I never get to listen to. I know the guy, however, and he's got the good stuff to play fo sho. If you think of something you'd like to hear, email them at "studio@wdvx.com" and they'll give it a shot. I joked with Tony Lawson a week or so ago when I called in for a song request- said it's nice to have my own "personal jukebox" with him. To a person there at WDVX, ALL are great folks to know and appreciate. And- be sure to check out the Metropulse.com cover story from last week about them if you haven't already! |

Oh yeah, Mox- Tony mentioned in the story that he got the idea from listening to WNCW-FM out of W. North Carolina... I remember those days too, when I lived in the right part of E. Knoxville to get the signal... another great community radio fave! Of course, the king-daddy of them all is WFMU in New Jersey... I once got a catalog of all the stuff they offered for fundraising. I still own a cassette of the "Shemp Meditation Tape"! THAT'S something I'm sure you could appreciate... oughta check and see if they still have any. Their catalog from years ago had some REALLY obscure and funky stuff... |
