Puerto Rico has voted down joining the US every time it comes up.
It's their choice, not ours.
They'll not join, and I can't say I blame them, not, one, bit.

I thought Britain was the 51st State of the USA, what with the "special relationship" & all.
(Maybe that changed when "O" took office for the first time. His Father was not keen on the British.)

I think sending back the bust of Winston Churchill said more about how BO feels about the UK than his words ever could.

Only concern I have is it would make the election map lean more to the democrat side The political balance of power between democrats and republicans would be altered.

@Glitch: Agreed! Funny thing is Churchill was half American.(Which makes him completely American per your birth laws etc')
I think the Mau Mau stuff had a lot to do with his feelings towards Britain.
My father served in Kenya during that time but has never said anything about it to anyone I know.

We have two guys that work at our shop that are from PR. One is a dyed in the wool American, former Ranger with 2 tours in the sandbox. The other one is a dedicated believer in independence.

They both admit they are HERE because of the cost of living in PR.

I do believe that this time around PR voted yes for change and the majority of the yes votes went for statehood.

Its up to congress now, see what they do with it.

For the first time Puerto Ricans voted in favor of statehood in a nonbinding referendum. Puerto Ricans were asked about their desires in two parts. First, by a 54 percent to 46 percent margin, voters rejected their current status as a U.S. commonwealth. In a separate question, 61% chose statehood as the alternative, compared with 33 percent for the semi-autonomous "sovereign free association" and 6 percent for outright independence.

As an Alaskan i openly welcome another "Non-contiguous" state. You get to be a state but no one really knows it.

Quite interesting. Of course a nonbinding referendum is just an opinion poll. Still I wonder what is swaying opinion at this point in time.

In May of 2005, the Council on Foreign Relations released a document entitled “Building a North American Community” in which it calls for an EU-like integration of Canada, the United States and Mexico.

For years PR has been stuck between staying like they are now and becoming a state. Very few Puerto Ricans want total independence from the US. The biggest problem in the past has been the culture and language difference between this former Spanish colony and the former English colonies up north. But now since Latinos are the fastest growing minority and Spanish culture is part of just about every state of the union, it may be time.

Just_ziptab, That's 60. I keep correcting people on that one, but it doesn't seem to stick.

Short form from the Prez.. "campaigned in...57 states, 1 to go, and they wouldn't let him campaign in Alaska and Hawaii."

That's 60. ( it was also a joke, but since his followers don't have that good a sense of humor, few laughed. )

Just wanted to correct a misperception.

Fairs fair.

BTW the Brits are busy in Iraq destroying poison gas shells. Not saying nothin, just saying.

I have no idea how the Puerto Ricans are going to go on on the State issue. Perhaps they'll put in an escape clause like Texas did, so they can leave if they want to?
