Picked up an Iron, and while I do really like it, boy do I love my Firebolt when I climb back on it. The Iron is a longer and heavier bike, but it's all down low and shorter, so it's easy enough to overlook... Accuracy and operating weights aside, the dry weight of the Firebolt is reported as 385 lbs. and the Iron 883 at whopping 548 lbs. A 160 lb difference! Ok, steel frame and metal bodywork, hefty wheels, but these bikes are loosely based on the same engine and drivetrain... Where else is this bike hiding its' weight? Is it just steel vs aluminum & plastic?

I think it's mostly in the frame. When the Sporty went from a rigidly mounted engine to a rubber mounted one, it gained somewhere around 100 lbs. |

Amazing such different bikes can have such a similar powerplant. Why Harley, if I may? Perhaps I may never understand? |

Why Harley, if I may? Is this a question directed at me? Wife doesn't like to ride pillion on a sportbike, and I wanted one someday. |

Not just in the frame, Buell lump has a lighter crank, different valve gear with the plastic pushrod cover instead of chromed steel tubes, etc etc. It all adds up. Wife doesn't like to ride pillion on a sportbike, Mine neither, she keeps on about me getting a Gold Wing to replace the STT. I just reply, "Ok if you're going to clean it." It's amazing how quickly the subject of conversation changes. |

My best friend has an Iron. I rode it a few times and it's an ok bike. Looks really good, underpowered but still fun to ride. I let him ride my bikes the other day. He started falling in love with the XB9S. The 1125CR scared him. Now he thinks the Iron is too slow. He's thinking of converting it to a 1200. |
