Not sure who this was, but there was a Buell rider that will no longer be riding with us. So sad. Driver of the truck was noted as not seeing the motorcycle. http://media.oregonlive.com/hillsboro_news/photo/c ornell-crashjpg-aaeadf07c982ab30.jpg |

Shame, my condolences to his family & friends. That's one of the things we have an advantage with here in Europe, those sort of intersections are mostly roundabouts or traffic islands as I think you call them. It slows the traffic speed down but the overall traffic flow is improved at busy times. Still doesn't prevent bonehead drivers doing stupid things though. |

The driver of the truck should have his license revoked permanently. |

(http://media.oregonlive.com/hillsboro_news/photo/cornell-crashjpg-aaeadf07c982ab30.jpg) Very sad photo. That's an unbelievable amount of damage to the truck. Prayers and condolences for the family of the rider. I don't know if I want the driver of the truck to really understand what they have done or not. I can't imagine living with that. |

Holy crap. What are the relative speeds needed to dent a steel bumper that much? People that kill others in a negligent way like that should have a mandatory loss of license. Like the old folks that run over pedestrians. "I'm sorry" doesn't cover it. Money doesn't cover it. Solve the problem by removing them from a position that does further harm. |

RIP Horrible. Just horrible. This is why I sold my motorcycle. When I had my son everything changed and it no longer was acceptable for me to risk so much. |

That truck either moved or was stationary when it was hit , the bike is right in front of it, to do that much damage to the truck if the truck was moving it would have been further away or much worse (how could it though)It doesn't mean a thing as far as blame though. I have had people pull right in front of me and stop and I was doing at times near 70 mph.I am just thinking the hit must have been tremendous. I just hate seeing that stuff my heart goes out to the family!!!! |

I own one of those trucks and that IS a lot of damage, but the front bumpers are super flimsy right in the middle. I have seen a 150lb whitetail do that much damage getting hit broadside at 30mph. I have had people turn left in front of me...not a good combo. |

Looks a lot of damage due to crumple zone which absorbs the shock. Unfortunately a rider is his own crumple zone. Please be careful out there. |

Brutal reality of riding around inattentive riders. ATGATT mitigate the risk. It does not matter how good of a rider you think you are when that driver on a cell phone center punches you. Ride as if you are invisible because you are. Never trust the other guy to stop for the stop sign, and beware un-signaled left turns and turns out of driveways. That cover everything? |

Pretty much mate. I'll add a few truck drivers tips. Look at the front wheels, often the first indication of a stationary or slow vehicle about to pull out. Use ALL visual resources, reflections in shop windows, other vehicles doing odd things further up the road, etc. Look for the moving radio antenna, the pedestrian approaching the crosswalk with a cellphone stuck to their ear, the kid on the skateboard, the cyclist who's about to get taken out right in front of you by the clown opening the door of his parked car without looking, the roof of the car that's approaching the next junction behind a hedgerow or fence. And just because it's on the other side of the road doesn't make you safe! The dickhead going the other way may well swerve out & frontal you to avoid a hazard on his side. You've got to be like a fighter pilot, head on a swivel looking for bandits. Be AWARE, I know we all laugh at Jean Claude Van Damme, but you must be AWARE. The cagers aren't going to do your thinking for you, they're in their comfort zone with the temperature set just right, the radio on & the autopilot engaged. Here endeth the lesson. |

Good advice Grumpy and much of what you said is exactly what I do currently. |

What a shame. Wonder whay she was thinking of right before she hit him? Even though my bikes are well lit at the front I still am trying to hit any car that may pull or turn out in front of me with my high beams. I figure if they don't see me at first at least that will catch their attention. |

Careful with the high beams. Some people see that as an invitation to go, not stop. |

What Grumps said, in spades... I always track the trajectory of a vehicle's wheels parallel to the dotted white line as I pass them (which is often...)- I can tell if they are sketchy pretty quick. I also have lately taken note of what they're doing as I pass. SOMEDAY I WILL have a train horn for those who are texting, of fiddling with their "smart" phones... for way too many people, "smart" phones make them F*cking IDIOTS. I just cuss the other idiots who are just talking on their phones. It amazes me when I see an 18 wheeler piloted by some douche canoe yakking on his damn phone. Hell, most of the time when I see an LEO he's yakking on a GD cel phone for Chrissakes. I used to think old people were crappy drivers, but generally they're just slower than us... I always appreciate when their eyes are up and forward, and they have two hands on the wheel. We face a future as motorcycle lovers that is increasingly more dangerous... it seems ALL kids are becoming bonded with these infernal devices. I actually walked past a table at work tonite, and had a thought of appreciation for a young boy who was coloring a piece of paper with crayons. Too many other young children are futzing with frickin phones... and, adults as well. "You've got to be like a fighter pilot, head on a swivel looking for bandits."

I don't flash them, I turn them on until I am past the intersection. If they are stupid enough to interpret that as a signal to go they will go anyway. |

I had a car flash me just before making a left turn right in front of me. I'm glad I practice hard stopping once in a while. I definitely had the back end in the air avoiding that one. Hard to say you didn't see someone you just flashed your lights at too. |

After feeling good about drivers being generally attentive around me recently, on one night I got cut off by five vehicles on my short commute. So much for that. Keep your guard up. That's one thing I don't miss about working at a motorcycle dealership; the aftermath of wrecks like this. |
