Great shots. Shame that this program is at it's end. I knew an Al Bowers from Unidyne in Virginia Beach. We worked on ionaspheric recorders, converting them from analog to digital, back in the day. I wonder if it's the same Al? Would be about 54 years old. | ||

Steve, I was excited to read the link above and see if we were referring to the same "Al". Sad to say, it isn't him. Thanks. EDIT: My wife noted in the third pic from Al above, that we have went from the balloon era, to sub-orbital flight, and on to space flight, all in one great shot from Albion Bowers...excellent (Message edited by two_seasons on September 22, 2012) | ||

I remember seeing the shuttle Enterprise on it's piggyback transporter flying steadily up the Thames through London in 1983. I was up on Blackheath that day looking down on it. Incredible to think those 747s are still flying nearly 30 years on. Thanks for the pics. | ||

Why the jet escorts? Somebody might hijack a "end of life" shuttle? And it's not like they can stop and help if the piggy back gets in trouble. Other than that,I am totally fascinated with the depth of the whole space program and how they make any of it work. Been watching Apollo 11(and others) on youtube......................riveting! | ||

"Moonraker" Just_zip, im just sayin.... The escort is there to make sure pieces are not coming off the shuttle during flight, and to provide a birds eye view (literally) in case trouble pops up. What a cool job. |
