Its oil change time for the XT. Until now, I’ve had the dealership do it. I want to start doing it now to save the money. For the engine oil change I found Froggy's excellent instruction set with pictures. It looks like a piece of cake.

While we're talking about changing the oil: What about oil filters? I remember I could get a walmart brand filter for my Blast. Are there any after market oil filters that fit an XB? Fram or Purolator or some other brand?

Now to the question: Is there an instruction set like Froggy's engine oil instructions but for transmission oil. I’d like one that uses lots of pictures?

Thanks in advance

Never mind about the oil filters. Found a good thread with lots of cross over numbers.

Never saw instructions for the tranny oil, but it's pretty simple. Remove plug, drain oil. Reinstall plug. Take one of the covers off the primary- either the inspection cover or the clutch cover, pour in 1 quart of your tranny lube of choice (I like HD Formula +). Reinstall cover. You're good to go.

So it doesn't matter which cover come off, the round or the key hole shaped one?

Right- you just need a hole to get the new oil in through.

Ok. Sounds easy enough even I can do it.

Thanks much.

I use the chain inspection hole since the clutch cover is a bit low if the bike is on the stand.
Also, I can poke the chain to see if it needs adjustment.

+1 on the small cover. If it's time to change the oil, it's time to inspect the chain adjustment. Of course, if you take the large cover off you can do a clutch adjustment, too.

+1 on doing it right.

If you're changing the primary oil, check the primary chain and do the clutch adjustment. Both adjustments are easy, and both are well-outlined in the factory service manual.

Sounds like a good plan to me.
