uh, I found a Sportster that I might like to buy [insert boo, hiss here...] Anyway, it has forward controls. My first choice would be for mid controls, but it is used, priced nicely, and is what it is for that fact. My question is - if I ended up hating the forward controls, how much of hassle is it to change it to mid controls? How much might it cost? Just looking for ballpark advice. Thanks... |

There are enough guys with mids that I'm sure someone on XL forum would swap straight up... |

Apart from the footrests, do you have "plans" for it? Thunderstorm heads & a Mikuni maybe? And if you do that, might as well get the full benefit with some new cams & lifters. And then...

It's a very simple conversion on a Sporty. Like Thumper said, you can probably work out a swap. The forward controls are in demand from the HD crowd and they are pretty expensive from HD. |

A buddy of mine just did the swap from mid to forward on his softail. Two of them did it in the garage in an afternoon. |

been out of it for a while - which softail has mids ?!?!? the swap from the dealer will hit you about a grand if you us HD parts and labor - more if you Arlen Ness, or niche billet best thing to do is hit the local CL / Swap meets for those with Mids looking to go 'Forward' I always thought that Mids with highway pegs, was the best way to go.... of course when the road got twisty I was known to put my feet back on the passenger pegs and tuck into the lean more aggressively..... but reaction time suffers on both |

no boos from me, i'd love a sportster Having ridden a sporty with forwards, I understand why you'd want to swap them out...I hate forwards, dont understand them. But as others stated, some love them and you'd likely be able to swap them outright. Hell, might be able to sell them for more than you could buy the mids. I MIGHT have a friend who is getting rid of his mids (for forwards), if so I could have him email you (or I could PM you with his info). Let us know if you buy it. And Im with Mr Grumpy - Buell heads, better carb, get some ponies in it! |

I have some mid controls I don't plan on reinstalling on my Sportster (2007 XL1200N) IIRC, they're black. The install at HD only cost me about 250 bucks. Let me know if you get the bike, and if you're interested in them, and I'll get you some info on them. |

"been out of it for a while - which softail has mids ?!?!?" Previous owner changed a bunch of stuff on the bike that he's changing back. Now that I think of it, it may not be a softail afterall. I'll have to find out for sure. |

in principle, i don't want forward controls, but i can't ride my 883 iron with mid controls because i am too tall (32 inch inseam) for it's low seat height. you might want to try them for a while. the "clamshell" riding position with forward controls and drag bars is not bad. |

the Iron's problems are solved by a tall boy seat, and longer shocks from the last year of the 'R' - fork springs too. You can also get S-bends to bring the pegs down another 3/4 of an inch |
