So I love wool socks, hands down the best material ever. I want to get a wool base layer and maybe an everyday sweater, like a mil-surplus with the reinforced elbows and shoulders. anyone have a good source for afordable wool? |

If you can't find anything off the shelf, send me a PM. My wife is in the wool community (spinners and knitters) and she can probably hook you up with somebody who would do something on contract. It wouldn't be cheap, but it could be infinitely custom (blends, design, fit, etc). |

Try woolrich, although most of their stuff isn't made in the US anymore. The quality is good and the price is usually reasonable. You can even find woolrich USA made vintage stuff online. That stuff is indestructible. |

"wool sock? explain the benefit to a cotton sock wearer please. What am I missing?" 1. Cushion. For those of us who are on our feet all day, they are all-day comfy. 2. Absorbency. Wool absorbs perspiration and dries quickly. 3. Warmth. Keeps the tootsies toasty warm when it is chilly. And despite my bwb handle, I do know "chilly" outside of FL. I grew up in the tundra...aka Northern Minnesota. I wear wool socks year round, and have had people make snarky comments on my wardrobe choices (ok, they are not always the most fashionable choice). Back to original question, you might google sportsmans guide and see if they have anything. My son is a military surplus freak and they have odds and ends...u never know what they have in stock. Good luck. BeLinda. |

Wigwam is nice if you like second tier socks. Try Darn Tough if you want some great socks. Darn Tough made in Northfield, Vermont. Also second tier from Wisconsin, yellow cheddar cheese, what's that about? |

Big fan of wool here Yup, the WigWam sox are great, but then again there are no bad wool sox. SAS style sweaters? - Fraid you're stuck w. offshore manufacture. Check out "Sierra Trading Post" for new - or - someplace such as "Sportsman's Guide" for mil surplus. My opinion, the are too warm for all but the coldest days. Favorite sweater = USN squid sweater over "Armorall" style undergarment (If w/ wife or sisters my favorite is the one they knitted) |

Army Surplus stores - The best winter pants were the Norwegian paratrooper pants (at least that's what they were tagged). Those suckers were thick, roomy and had big cargo pockets. Best pants ever for backcountry skiing. Found some really good sweaters there too. I still buy Wigwam socks. |

Agree with all aforementioned opinions about wool. I wear wool socks year round. Warm in winter and cool in summer. The original wicking material. Try a merino wool sweater under your jacket when it's 5 below outside and you'll recognize its value as a layering garment. Smartwool is another brand that offers many options for wool clothing. |

Best under bikewear thermals brand I've used: http://nz.icebreaker.com/on/demandware.store/Sites -IB-NZ-Site/en/Home-Show?Country=NZ Also rate Possum fur/wool blends highly. Imported Possum is a major pest in NZ so they have massive culls and have come up with lots of uses for the pelts. Remarkably warm when blended with Merino wool. |

OK, sounds like they are worth a try. I would figure them to be itchy, and not cushiony. But I will take a look. Better for riding I take it? |

if you're going to be on your feet and moving around, i'd avoid the big thick fluffy socks. your feet will slide around and give you hot spots, and your feet will likely overheat and sweat, which means they'll be wet, and that means cold in the winter. one of the biggest things to help your feet is foot powder. i started using it in army boots, but now i use it for everything but tennis shoes. reducing moisture in your footwear is huge! |

havent done it in a while, but you used to be able to get those service sweaters from CheaperThanDirt .com Have one in black, green, and a German one - the German one is less itchy and my fav I cant believe that way back in the day - the teens' that wool sweaters were consider an integral part of ATGATT; the rides were no more than bicycles.... but the speeds were still over the double nickle |

"explain the benefit to a cotton sock wearer please" Cotton, when wet, moves heat away from your feet. Wet wool retains its insulating properties. |

I like Smartwool. REI carries their products. They use Merino Wool so there is zero scratchy feel. Been using for years of backpacking and cold riding seasons. http://www.smartwool.com/ |

Smartwool has different thicknesses/cushion areas, depending if it is for hiking, ski/board boots, etc. Nice stuff - best socks I have had for cold weather sports. |
