Hello all...

Im looking into getting a 50's or 60's model VW double cab truck. The ones below are my end goal... After years of work of course since I don't have 40k to buy a restored one. I'm sure I'll end up with a junker for now :-)

Anyone into these as well? I don't know what it is, but I just love the double cab trucks!!
Although, I'll probably have to sell my bike and Silverado to get one :-)

The wife keeps going back and forth on it...
I'll just have to find one and tell her when she is in a good mood ... If I can ever find one semi locally.

oooysht, the double cab Kombi truck - there are few more rare veewee's out there.
Maybe the Convertible Dannhauser & Stauss or Rometsch Roadster or the Type III Ghia.

They can be had - but they are tough to find. It is a clique niche market - get up on the BBS and Blogs, and check the local grave yards.

In the PNW I would try Abrons in Spokane, and Buttera in Bothell - both have been very good to me for obscure and niche parts.

I always wanted to take the chasis and motor from the vans of the Ford / Dodge van-trucks of the era and rebody it with a topless VW van mod.
V8 power, classic VW style.

That is pretty sweet, did someone make it out of a couple of different models?

They actually offered a single cab and a double cab for a while. You can find single cabs more often over the double cab, but I gotta have a comfy place for the family :-)

City, what's the BBS and the PNW? I'm pretty new to the classic VW scene. I gotta have one!! Haha

BBS - Bulletin Board S - ie forum list serv for the fanatics ; it's an underground network of people that tell stories of hidden VW graveyards and the parts that are there....

PNW - Pacific North West.

and the double cabs are indeed rare; especially in good shape ....

but oddly the double cab UniMogs are affordable (four wheel drive behemouths )

I'd like to just have a cab over truck period. I really like the Ford Econolines and the Dodge's aren't bad either. Didn't VW make a side load bed on their cab over trucks?

You know there is a minty looking yellow KarmanGhia for sale on my way to work taunting me every day.

Thank god it's not a convertible or I would do something stupid.

My dad had a 1963 double cab when I was in high school (early 80's) - blue, like the ones in the photos, but not nearly as well detailed. Great fun to drive. I'd give my eye teeth to have it back.

Ive been keeping my eye out for one for years. that would be my ideal daily driver, besides my X1 that is. The full bus is just to hard to heat up here in Alaska.
Ya never know when something might pop up.

That's true, never know. I have my fingers crossed.
First I gotta sell the bike and Silverado, maybe the house too HAHA!

I don't like the other cab overs because they have the motor up front, I like the VW setup with it in the rear.

I don't care if the truck is gutted with no motor, I can take care of that. What I don't know how to do is body work or rust repair. That's going to be the tricky part.

So I'm just looking for a good body to start with.
My end goal is something like the above, just beautiful!!

My first car was a '73 Super Beetle- in the early 90's I picked up a '70 Transporter, for $500, then put $500 into a new motor. I bought it to drive while my '78 280Z was getting a new motor...

Talk about a sea change for driving habits! Once I was in the Z, I was constantly scanning for the po po- with the bus, I just waited to get to highway speeds, then enjoyed rolling at 60ish...

I'd LOVE to have a camper, or a Ghia all fixed up, or about anything from back then.

Of course, one must check out all the vintage VW mags- heck, I still do every now and then!

Good luck finding one of those.. They are VERY rare as they weren't that popular to start with. I saw an extremely rough one for sale 4 years ago for 10k being sold by a local VW guru. It was gone it less than 0ne day and he got asking price

you might try looking for a corvair truck. they are actually easier to find, but only come in the single cab

I would be surprised to see one of those van/pickups maintain speedlimit up a hill with more than two adults and some luggage.

They have the same opposed 4 as the beetle, right?

I'm with Tom. A Corvair Rampside looks similar and you get two more cylinders to boot (or as mr grumpy would say, "in the boot").

Although these are cool looking transport units, if you plan to tote your family around in it you might find it's construction is not on the safe side and if it has rust in it's seams.....well let's say it would be just as safe to stack the whole family on the back/top/sides of the Uly.....and what the heck.....you will have nearly 26% more horse power.

When you inspect one for condition look at the front body panel's construction. Single panel, single panel corners and welded areas. Having been a body man from that era to now, I have seen worn out sneakers with more structural support than a rusty VW van.
If the doors drop when you open them, watch the door post for movement. If the post moves you are into a major body rebuild job.

When the Bug engines were touting 60 hp in the early 70's these vans were running at around 75 hp with their two carb set up.

I had a '68 Bug as my first car and a '74 Super Beetle as my second. The '74 was pushing out about 105 hp with the header and Holly Bug Spray 2bbl set up.

The only out for these old VW's in an accident was that they were light and round bodied so they could actually bounce off a lot of things in a wreck. However if they hit something square or got hit squarely it did not take much to squeeze the air out of them.

I like the old V Dubs, but on today's highways I would reconsider a family trip to the beach in one. Get the single cab, if you can find it, let the wife and kids drive the air bagged Toyota, and meet them at the beach where they can take pictures of you as you drive into the parking lot looking 'oh so cool'.

I cut my teeth on a '63 Beetle.then a '68.The first band I played in the lead guitar player had a '65 21 window with a neon peace symbol in the rear window. We got in a lot of trouble in that van.
