I'm in SoCal (91390). Trying to buy something out near Bloomington, IN (47401-ish). If I crated up this item, it'd probably weight on the order of 800 lbs (including crate) and be about 13 ft long, 5 ft tall, 5 ft wide. So when I try to get shipping quotes, I get bowled over by ludicrous pricing. Basically, if I was to ship 2000 lbs of concrete in this same crate it would be cheaper than my 800 lbs of something else - by a LOT. I'm contemplating a 1 way truck rental, my own slowyota pulling a little trailer, and all manner of things. I was wondering a few things. NMFC / NMFTA codes - does anyone have a list of these codes that they'll share along with the freight classes? I know they're not supposed to be publicly posted - so we can keep it private. Shared driving / expenses: Anyone making a similar move who'd like to share expenses and driving duties? Race Teams: With 1 exception, most of these pieces can probably take up spare space inside a trailer. I'd happily pay for the privilege and maybe even help crew for a weekend or whatever. Any other ideas? I don't (yet) have any sort of hard time table. Help! -Saro ok, its part of an airplane project - ssshhhhhhh |

If concrete in the same sized crate is a lot cheaper then why not tell them it's light-weight concrete or some other item that has a lower rate? 800 lbs isn't much weight but volume-wise your crate takes up a good chunk of an enclosed trailer so I can see how it could cost a pretty penny to ship. |

John- I agree if they were ONLY asking: 1) what size is your package? 2) what weight is your package? 3) is your package hazardous? 4) what value would you like to insure? But they are not. Not looking for a free lunch. Also not looking for a casual rape, either, which is sorta what I'm feeling from these guys. I have already considered buying some bags of conrete (I actually need them) and weighing down the crate a few hundred pounds. This whole thing is absurd. I must be missing something. -Saro |

What kind of prices are you getting now,and what kind of time frame do you require? Exclusive use vehicle on a hot shot would be about $4000. Give me time to play with it and watch the number shrink. Holler back. |

I've been getting quotes north of $3k. I just stopped paying attention and don't recall the exact numbers. These parts have very little value. Also, depending on the situation, the crating can be changed somewhat. -Saro |

Might be less expensive to crate it in small crates, then ship UPS or FEDX. A lot of independent drivers will no longer enter CA. because of your silly emission laws. Means more expense. |

I would have never thought that CA would make it more expensive than any other state but.... Just out of curiosity, how much would the shippers charge if it was in AZ or NV? Maybe it makes sense to do the toy-yoda+trailer to the border and then ship it from there? |

Yeah, you're shipping some pretty oblong and what us in the LTL freight industry like to call, the trailer killer freight. Anyways, I've got to ask, what quote did you get from FedEx Freight Economy? |

Teeps- Look at the bottom of the first post... Brinnutz- It was mostly a north of $3k situation. I didn't feel like this was something they really wanted to deal with. For about $3300 I can just get a 16' POD across that distance and not worry about crating and dealing with bizarre LTL secret handshakes, etc. So to go with that sort of number - AND I still have to crate the thing - AND I have no real guarantee that they won't spring me with some oddball charge at the end (I've heard stories).... -Saro |

Had to look a couple of times to see it. I wish I had an answer for you; as, the shipping scenario, doesn't make any sense to me either... |

Just as an update - a vehicle shipping company quoted me about $1300 for an 800lb crate of the specified dimensions. They claimed to not care about its contents. Trying to get them to confirm that. -Saro |

I understand the container dimension requirements vs the weight. But why is there a problem with shipping an aircraft, whether complete or incomplete? |

I did this a few years ago... The move we're talking about here is pretty simple. The faster you want it, the more it will cost. |

I'm currently in the exact same process. After getting truck rental and shipping quotes, I decided to buy a trailer and modify it for airplane transport. The "pre-owned" trailer is going to run me about $800 plus another $100-$200 or so for the wing racking parts. So for about $1G, I'll have a trailer I can keep (forever) vs. $600 for a 3 day truck rental (and the $$$ it would have cost to drive the huge fuel sucking truck home)..... I'll be towing the trailer there and back (about 1100 miles with my Jeep. It will be nice to have the trailer to transport the plane to the airstrip and back when necessary. Part of this decision was made easier because I really wanted to "SEE" the airplane prior to paying for it..... |
