I was casually informed by a mechanic at south seas BMW(on Oahu) that one of the primary reasons HPD switched from Harley to BMW was that the overall maintenance cost of the BMW was cheaper. (Message edited by smoke4ndmears on August 01, 2012) |

Ok, everyone off this Thread! It was supposed to be about how H-D(spit) shot themselves in the foot, all the while freeing Erik to do what he does best. And I don't care if the BMW is the better bike, H-D(spit) absolutly screwed themselves out of their own future by not allowing Erik free rein to develop the best motorcycles on the planet! Don't fear the future, get on the damn bus already! |

HD is content with the XR1200X as their 'sport' flavored bike. heavier, less power, older iconography - it is what 'sells' to the HD crowd though from my understanding the XR1200X numbers are nowhere what they had hoped for nor forecast.... but I do like the bike, in orange, dressed with the new mini bags from the Dyna Crosswhatever thehell FXDAYADDA - it could be a nice sedate sport touring bike The VROD is more of a power cruiser as they have killed the performance mid set up of the StreetRod years ago. When Buell was nixed and closed - it killed ALL the fun out of the H-D shop for me. The Thrill is gone. Looking for great things from EBR and HERO that could relight the fire. |

Otherwise - hmm is that a new 'black' for this year for Harley ? Well, I had to visit a somewhat local dark custom emporium about 2 weeks ago. As a side note, their showroom used to be packed with H-D's and Buell's. On this visit, a sole Buell (a Blast!) and VERY FEW H-D's with LOTS of open space. Back to the point, I was intrigued by a product I saw in the parts area. A tire sidewall protectant with the Trademarked name of Harley Black... My crappy cell phone pic:

So the lesson H-D(spit) takes away from the dismal sales of the XR1200X is the the H-D(spit) core customer does not desire sport or performance motorcycles and the Motor company shall not persue those customers.....LOL! |

2012 is the last year the XR's will be sold in the USA. Guess I have another collectors bike. |

Wow Bob- really?! That seems like a pretty stupid move by the MoCo, but it's not like we've not seen THOSE before... I bet they'll wait a couple of years and bring them back like they do to ALL the models... I guess this is what they call "new" bikes. I will say the Switchback is the smartest thing they've done in a minute- being a Dyna frame and lighter overall, it should handle nicely plus cover the miles well. |

It still suffers from teh same problems that it did 20 years ago in terms of speed (lack of), handling (lack of) weight (too much) and general useability and suitability as a police bike." No sense in arguing with an "expert"... I'm done posting about this. |

J. Brad That's what the salesman said when I bought this '09.
My guess is that the XR will not come back. It will be like the AMF Sportster Cafe racer. |

Wonder how long the AMA will continue to run the XR1200 "Tractor Races" then. I have NO idea why they chose THAT to be the support class at the Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP... to contrast the most modern, high tech motorcycles on the planet with one of the most primitive?? XRs are better on dirt flat tracks. Leave the road racing to the "Big Boys." Come on EBR!! |

they will build another one.... in thirty or so years With the bags from the cross fire - I really do like it for a sport touring alternative - but then again I like sportsters Had three of them, I will probably have another one - just waiting for the right one to show up that I can't resist like kryptonite. .... the 72 in a heavy metal flake green with gold accent could be a contender too |

Sidewall protectant? Does HD really suggest you put a slick, shiny protectant on the TIRE? Amazing |

Do you really think HD is suggesting that you actually ride your new motorcycle and not create a garage display to show it off when the other dentist, lawyers and docs come over. Remember HD is selling the image not the motorcycle. |

1313 - youre complaining about "harley black" but HD isnt the only one who does that http://kawpower.com/legal-notices/kawasaki-tradema rks green |

Sure, but Kawasaki green is a specific shade of green that most bike type people would immediately recognize. Black is black. And if it isn't, we'll, it isn't black. Unless its a slightly darker black (Message edited by hootowl on August 06, 2012) |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOqAamL9xls And actually Hoot - go to a Kaw dealership and look at their green bikes, there is a difference between the green they put on the street bikes vs the green on the dirtbikes. But youre missing the point, he's complaining that they trademarked "harley black" but Kaw went and trademarked "Green" Whats the difference really? They are both doing the same thing. but no, many are very biased here and will bash HD while creating excuses for others. |

I always liked the V-Rod. For that matter, why didn't HD try to make a police model out of the V-Rod with mid controls? That would have made more sense to me, but I'm just an amateur. |

Bolt - I agree. I wish they did more with that platform (tourer etc). While I dont see myself ever having one (except for a Destroyer, I lust for that), I think they are neat bikes with plenty of potential. Shame the traditional HD guys couldnt accept it and most others hate HD so bad they cant overlook the logo on the tank |

Had a salesman at the local shop tell me I was the only customer he had that really liked the Streetrod. I guess I'm one of the last of the midset control guys left...... I really like the XR1200x. Unfortunately for H-D(spit) I have a Cyclone, which in every category, eats one for breakfast. I know this is sacrilege, but I'd like a Xr1200 with a King/Queen seat, to optimize it for giving rides, and tossing a saddlebag on for journeys. As to the original topic, For a police bike it's best to have a low seat to allow for shorter officers. "Electra-Glide in Blue" comes to mind. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070022/ I know that compromises handling to a great extent, and a good dept should be open to BMW's or Uly's for competent officers. In the best of all worlds. Now if only EBR made the "new Cyclone" for me, I mean, Us. |

Aesquire: The Cyclone's ergos were just about PERFECT. I'd love to have another bike with those ergonomics combined with the 1190RS' power/handling/braking. The XB12Ss Lightning Long was CLOSE, but my legs got cramped up after too long a stint in the saddle. The 1125R was worse. Both were MILES ahead in reliability and build quality though. I rode my M2 to Daytona and back one year. I wouldn't've DREAMED of riding any of the other two bikes like that... my body aches just thinking about it. |

When I rode the XR at IMS in Long Beach, I was really hoping for a lot more than what I experienced... While HD was different from the other manufacturers present in that they allowed for unlimited solo test rides, I returned it after only a few miles. I found it to be sluggish, overweight, and suspension was lacking in every way. I was honestly very disappointed. It's a cool-looking bike, but that's about where it ends for me. |

WRT HD patenting the term "Harley Black", what do you expect? When you hire hoards of lawyers to protect your IP, you get little TMs on everything. All businesses patent trade names. When you get ripped off as much as HD does, it's not surprising that there's a proclivity to patent everything, no matter how insignificant. |

Try the Uly Jamie, very close to the M2, but a bit roomier. And without the bags on it, a Uly isn't really much bigger than an M2 (shorter but taller). |

I rode my friend's Uly... but I think I'd've been more of an XB12XT person... street suspension, tires, bags. The bars were more upright than the Cyclone, but the pegs were about right. The locking hard bags would've been a bonus, too. Oh well. |
