In the simplest terms, lie. Get into power, by lying about your intentions. Once in power, slide the "reforms" you want in, and lie about both WHY you want to change things in that manner, and WHAT you figure that change will bring.
How do I know this? Glenn Beck didn't cry and convince me, Rush doesn't even know, and the Internet, at the time, was a Darpa project to ensure communications after massive nuclear attack. ( I STILL have friends who work in deep, deep bunkers for that very reason. No, I won't tell you where. )

Way back in High School, I did independent study on politics, political parties, law enforcement, etc. Liberal teachers. Great days. We volunteered for political campaigns to see what really happens. We went through the whole arrest procedure, as arrestees, and as observers, following trials from arrest to conviction.
Naturally, as a teen, I was ignorant, and sure how smart I was. Naturally I was wrong about how smart I was and how dumb my parents were, since they worked for a living and payed taxes to a corrupt, fascist government. So I sent to the Communist Party USA, and asked. How does Communism Work? How do you make it happen? How can I help? How do I become a neighborhood organizer? ( just coincidentally, that was the current President's job. Paid well. Very odd, that. )
I was enthusiastic, honest in my quest for wisdom, and wrote everything up.... you know, to get a grade.
The CPUSA was thrilled to have a young eager fellow join them, so they sent me stuff. Pointed out books. Gave me the info I needed to become an Organizer. Taught me Dialectic Materialism. Turned me on to Alinsky. ( coincidentally, the Sec State's Thesis was on Alinsky. I've read it. It's well written. The President's mentors at Harvard were acolytes of Saul Alinsky. No one alive knows what HIS thesis was on. )
So I learned. I read the history of the Labor Movement. The Temperance Movement. The Progressive Movement.
I admit, the fine points of the Dialectic have always alluded me. You are supposed to be able to put any argument in the "have you quit beating your wife" mode, so that all possible answers serve your purpose. Not, the truth, your purpose. Which is to win by any means necessary.
But what I really learned, was that the Lie was the basis for all things leftist.
You can't tell people you wish to take all their stuff, and give it to your buddies. They get angry, and won't let you. So you lie. You can't admit that your funding comes from the Soviet Union, and your Masters are in Moscow. So you lie.
You can't tell people that your Affordable Health Care Act ( or racial quotas, or racist immigration laws, or....) is designed to ruin the existing system, so you can put one in that gives you all the wealth and power. So you lie.
Every single step of the path to power is paved with the lies you utter, and the lives you ruin with those lies.
Let's face it, Marx didn't come up with one new idea, but he did package the ideas he stole and wrapped them in a package that could be sold.
It's like the Vegamatic. Didn't work in 1968, didn't work in 1988, doesn't work now, but they changed the name and got a guy that yells to sell it, and It Sells.

Haven't met many that are across the board, go-back-to-the-50's nutjobs. There are a few. Hard to find.
Mostly, they seem to glom onto a few ideas, like a limited constitutional government, and hang their hat on it. In a lot of matters, like Equal pay for equal work, they seem pretty liberal, to me.
I'm happy to mock the ones that think "Happy Days" was real. In the real Wis. Fonzie was a thug. Chachi was a rapist, etc.

RE: the shooting near A&M, I have read that the officer who was shot first was serving the shooter eviction papers. This was not a random shooting. Odd that about half of the new articles leave that part out. Reporting random gun violence suits their agenda apparently.
