One of the best people I met on a Buell forum was killed yesterday out side of St. Petersburg, Russia. He was riding with his girlfriend. Vasily was in the process of teaching me enough Russian so I could come and visit. God speed my friend, Vasily Omelchenko |

From a friend on FB: "RIP Vasya. To all his English speaking friends. Vasya died today in a moto crash in St Petersburg. I think you all and I will remember him as crazy, always ready to get up and go to a different side of the World, also a high professional in science, clever, reliable, kind, often stubbon (but friendly stubbon), sometimes a bit annoying (but friendly and for only a second!), independent and attention requiring - Vasya has always been such Vasya! One of the best friends. He's still in front of me smiling with his typical Vasya-style smile. And he'll always be." |

Wow, I was friends with Vasily on Facebook when I was there. Had several long e-mails regarding riding options for his trip to the USA last year. Wow, just wow. He seemed like a really stand up guy from across the pond and had planned to ride with him on his next trip here. Ride Hard Vasily, Ride Hard. |

I'm a newcomer, so I never knew Vasily. Regardless, this his horrible news. I'm leaving on a trip on my Buell tomorrow morning and will dedicate it to his memory. Rest in Peace. |

Wow that is horrible. He was a great guy and it was a pleasure to know him, albeit so briefly.

Was hoping to get to meet up with him on his next venture over the pond. In fact, I had contemplated someday taking a trip over there, only because I would have had someone I knew to show me around. Godspeed Vasily, we'll see you on the other side. Pegs down for you bro. |

"I have asked God about it too but we can not change the fate of a biker." From one of his old posts in a crash thread. Sad day. |

There was a photo she posted of him and her on the bike titled "the road to St. Petersburg," but it was not there any longer last night when I checked... |

Damn. I met Vasily in Houston a few years back and guided him across town from the airport to the HD dealer where he was renting bikes for his American cross-country trip. He was a great guy and a real adventurer. Godspeed, Vas... rt |

This is what his friend posted as to what happened. I am hoping his girlfriend (Clair?) came away unharmed, but I believe they were riding two-up? I know many of you are bikers. So I'll try and explain the situation which lead to this tragedy. It was a highway with 4 lines in one direction, with average speed 110-120 km/h (70-75 mph). It was slightly turning right but just a little so no slowing down was needed. First, some van and some jeep hit each other without a big damage though but still they had to stop on the line #3, call the police and be preparing docs - doing all these usual in this situation things. According to an unconfirmed information the van driver forgot to put an emergency sign (not sure if it's called like this - it's an orange light reflecting triangle usually put some 100 meters before the crash so other cars can see and react on time). So these crashed cars: the van and the jeep were staying still on line #3, Vasya was approaching on a safe line #2, and a bit in front of Vasya on line #3 there was a woman on a car as well. When the woman noticed the crashed van, she started slowly slowing down and taking to the line #2 right in front of Vasya. Vasya wasn't seeing the crashed van, but he was seeing that the line #3 is being freed and the car in front is slowing down. So he accelerated taking to the line #3... and jump right into the van. I know you all are experienced and cautious, but I hope that if you meet a similar situation you'll be even more many many many times more cautious, so this tragedy will never repeat! P.S. On the photo there's a shadow of me taking a photo of Vasya with a usual push-bike. It's when we were small and speeds were slow and we were just starting our two-wheel life. I'm still riding my push-bike but Vasya have chosen something more speedy, more extreme and cool. |

R.I.P Vasily. This is so sad and we pray for peace for his loved ones. Please be more careful than usual, folks. Seems we are living in strange times and losing too many of the good ones. Slow down, observe other peoples issues more, but still try to enjoy the ride. |
