Mike has been a member on here for quite a while. He has attended Buelltoberfest a couple of times and is friends with people on here. On Sunday we were on a group ride in Kentucky when a dog ran out of a blind drive and right in front of Mike who was last in line of a group of 8. Mike tried to avoid the dog but ended up hitting him and going down. He was conscious when I got back to him but pretty quickly lost consciousness. He was air lifted to UC hospital in Cincinnati where he underwent emergency surgery to remove a portion of his skull to allow for the removal of a subdural hematoma. He was wearing full gear when he crashed and suffered no other injury except for a small scratch on his nose. He has been in a coma since the accident. We are hoping he comes out of the coma shortly so we can find out how much damage was actually done. He could really use all the prayers he can get. Be careful out there everyone, Chris |

I wish for him the very best of recovery. I cannot help but ask.....what kind of a helmet let this happen? |

Very good question Vern- if he was ATGATT, and the sweep for the group, therefore not rolling at 8 or 9/10ths by a stretch (hopefully), what the heck happened? The quality of them "skid lids" will vary, but given the number of great reviews of various helmets I've read recently, looks like things can still go very wrong. Dobr- please post when you can update. At least our fella had virtually no other serious injuries... |

Mike had on full leathers with a back and chest protector. He had Sidi boots and a Scorpion Exo 1000 helmet. I don't think any helmet could have prevented his injury. We think maybe his full weight landed on the back right side of his helmet. The helmet cracked right in the back so it absorbed a lot of impact. I myself have cracked the same helmet and walked away from it. |

Sometimes it seems it just doesn't matter how prepared and careful you are. Except you know what the outcome would be if he hadn't been, there would be no hopeful waiting to see. Mike will be on my list. |

His condition is pretty stable. His blood pressure and heart rate are right around normal. His ICP numbers (inter cranial pressure) is running around a 4. 2 is normal. He is still in a coma. Still praying for a positive outcome. Chris |

Can you say whether this is a "medically-induced coma" or if this is still just the effect of the injury? Brain injury is scary but coma can mean MANY things. |

They got the Tracheotomy and Pick line in late yesterday. That is a big step, now they won't have to be so concerned with infection or pneumonia. His vitals are stable. We just need him to open his eyes now. So we wait. Chris |

If there is anything I can do as an "almost local" please let me know. Even manual stuff like bringing somebody a meal, mowing a lawn, etc. |
