I've been hearing rumors that Verizon is doing away with their unlimited data plans, even for those who were grandfathered in.
I figured I'd mention it here since there are several people (Froggy etc) who are very up-to-date on technology stuff etc

I know I received a text from Verizon yesterday about 'according to your usage you might benefit from a plan change' etc
I've had the same data plan for 2.5 years, since the day the Droid came out.

better question to you techies - is there a way around this without keeping the same phone for a few more years?

Everything Im reading is talking about 4G LTE and upgrading of your phone, didnt know if there was a way to get a 4G phone and not lose the unlimited data.

I think its bogus as hell.
Pisses me off

You can buy the new phone for the FULL MSRP (without the typical subsidy you get) in order to keep unlimited data.

I think when my contract expires, I might switch to a Nexus phone on T-Mobile to avoid the whole "CDMA vs GSM" crap that recently came to light regarding the AOSP ROMs AND Verizon's stubborn insistence on locking/encrypting the boot loaders.

The next time you upgrade to an LTE phone with Verizon, you will have to choose a tiered data plan. I'm waiting to see what their shared data plans are going to look like.

http://www.phonenews.com/verizon-pr-releases-state ment-on-forthcoming-changes-to-data-plans-20387/

"
Update: Verizon PR conveniently sent out this clarification to the New York Times, in what seems to be an attempt to reclaim control of perception and is infinitely more useful than the above statement from this morning. The statement is reproduced in full below.

– Customers will not be automatically moved to new shared data plans. If a 3G or 4G smartphone customer is on an unlimited plan now and they do not want to change their plan, they will not have to do so.
– When we introduce our new shared data plans, Unlimited Data will no longer be available to customers when purchasing handsets at discounted pricing.
– Customers who purchase phones at full retail price and are on an unlimited smartphone data plan will be able to keep that plan.
– The same pricing and policies will be applied to all 3G and 4G LTE smartphones."

I just called a local official Verizon store....and the guy knew little since it wasnt an official announcement yet.
But the way that I read (above) and the way he spoke is that since its not official yet then NOW is the time to switch and still be grandfathered in.
It sucks, Im being 'forced' to get a new phone sooner than I had planned, but it'll beat the added cost later of the tiered data plans or buying a phone outright.

Yeah, if you switch now, you'll be grandfathered in. At least until your next upgrade at the discounted price.

Daughter works at a Verizon Reseller (GoWireless). Last Saturday, my wife and I went in to say "Hi" and walked out with a Galaxy Nexium...Nexus. She has the unlimited Data plan, and it was a discounted price for the phone. No mention of tiered plans ("I haven't seen the memo..."). This may have been the last time to do so, but it seems like the time to do so is now!

I just got a Razr and went with the lowest (2G) plan but since the phone is a 4G LTE it automatically bumps it up to 4G, at the same price of 2G. I'll never even use the 2G up. My month is half up and I've used, as of 5/24, 0.244GB of data.

Ky - I think you're mixing up a 2G plan (2 gigabytes of data) with a 4G phone (4th Generation Network). They are two different things.

I have unlimited data with AT&T, grandfathered in and they let me keep it even when I buy a new phone with a renewed contract. Who knows if they'll follow suit like Verizon.

All I know is I have to try REALLY hard to use more than the 2GB that the lowest plan has, so if I were forced I wouldn't even notice.

Let me use it, I did 6GB half way through my last billing cycle, I forgot to check what it was before it reset the other day.

Sprint still has unlimited on phones for now.

Too bad their coverage area sucks. They also use CDMA technology (like Verizon) so not officially supported by AOSP anymore.

I gave up my unlimited last week in order to get the Personal Hotspot feature on my iPhone.

My new plan includes 5MB and in the first 30 day billing period I used 3,976.69MB of 5,120MB.

The 5MB plans costs the same as the Unlimited did. So, in my case, I came out ahead.

I do not use a data hog iPad3 and don't stream video or audio.

There will be no "unlimited" plans with ATT or Verizon a year from now.

Checking the weather to see where storms are going, plotting routes around the current traffic, helping people fix their bikes, removing spam on Badweb, showing high ranking Buell employees a video involving a pair of girls and a cup, reporting speed traps, VOIP calling, instant messaging, seeing whats on sale today on Steam, coordinating meetups, "checking in" to places, and a whole bunch more.

Personally, I have Verizon, it took the Verizon Win-back Team to make promises they could not keep when my sentence ended last time. I am so over Verizon, coverage area be damned, I am going with someboddy else after my currentw sentence ends with Verizon.

The wife and kids are on a share plan with verizon. Last year, I changed employers and needed to finally break down and buy my own phone. I went sprint with the intention of moving the whole family over due to the unlimited data. Between my actual data usage(never over 1.4GB/mo) and the crappy service, I think I'll keep them on verizon and ditch sprint instead. Can't think of a better/cheaper option when doing 5 phones.

I use a Verizon wireless card for my home computer and I finished my last billing cycle. I used just a little over 12 mb on my 5 mb plan. I stayed off my computer the last 3 days so I wouldn't get anymore extra charges.

I may have to get another internet supplier if this keeps up. Too expensive!

Just have to play the devil's side.

HTFU,you can't change the weather.
HTFU,just drive till you get where you're going.
Their bikes will get fixed with out you.
I love spam on toast.
TG's 1 cup.......waste of time.
Why report speed traps? Most people deserve to get tickets.
We have voip at work...it pretty much sucks in quality.......and still have to have a separate system for 911 calls.
Im's? Who cares. It can wait.
Steam......really? Games are that damned important?
Meetups........just be there when you said you will be there.
Oh come on Froggy,I'm just kidding. I have data.....

....but hardly ever use it.

My desktop PC is more than enuf of a digital leash..........thank God I can walk away from it and leave it all at home.........

I've got the Samsung Galaxy Note from AT&T with 3GB of data. I don't stream video other than the occasional Youtube clip, so I haven't had any problems with running over my limit. I mainly use it to Remote Desktop my Windows 7 PC at work, and it's quite good at that.

I've also got my original Droid with Verizon. Still on unlimited data for $9.99 per month. Obviously I don't run out of data on that.

I carry both devices with me and if push comes to shove, I can tether the Note to the Droid wirelessly and do whatever I need to.

Half the time I pull out the Note, it's got damned near zero signal. 99% of the time I pull out the Droid, it's got all of it's bars and 3g coverage.

Customer service sucks on both carriers.

That is all I have to say about that.

I been on Verizon for years and every time I hear They're doing away with (fill in blank) it's followed by Only new accounts old accounts will not have to up grade. BUT you do need to watch them as I went into a Verizon store for a battery and they were tried to change my account type when I paid for it.

BTW I get a deal through work as they have a big contract with Verizon and we can get a break even it if is a personal phone.
