People who text while driving should be killed (but JUST them)......is that too harsh? |

We're still arguing with lawyers. A texting 17 year old killed my mother a year ago Jan 31 at 10:30 at night, driving in a snowstorm in WI. She was doing about 35 on a rural road, he hit her at nearly 65. I'm not one to "lawyer up" at every little thing but have been angry for more than a year now and the punk's family lawyered up THAT NIGHT. Lawyers... sigh - the only winners. |

Slaughter, sorry for your loss. Please someone, explain to me what a texting-while-driving teenager who killed someone's mother has to "lawyer up" about. He has to live with this for the rest of his life on his conscience. No matter what is said in a courtroom, there is a higher law that applies here. |

Exactly. So this kid's family think a lawyer can help make all that disappear? WTF. |

No, but they need to lawyer up to reduce the possibility of jail time, and help minimize the sentence if needed. If you screwed up bad and killed someone, would you like to be raked over the coals? |

If you screwed up bad and killed someone, would you like to be raked over the coals? No, I would not. And the stress of a courtroom trial situation would be about as hard a raking as I could imagine, apart from the raking job one would be doing inside oneself. We are human beings, and sometimes we mess things up real bad. But this is going into forgiveness and redemption territory, and my head and time schedule aren't there today for that. |

In the past seven months two teens have wrecked on straight roads very near my place. One landed his car in a tree just above my house. He said he was texting and caught the berm on the left side of the divided highway. When he swerved right to get back on the road he spun around landing upside down and backwards in the trees seventy feet from my house. The other was a sixteen year old girl who wrecked on a straight stretch in back of my place rolling her suv over large rocks, hitting a power pole with the roof and stopping upside down in the field. I asked the fire chief how he got there so fast(he beat me and I saw the wreck happen on the back road) he said the girl's mother called. He said he asked her how she knew the girl had wrecked, mom said "I was texting her when it happened so I called right away!" |

"yet millions of people do it without hurting anyone every single day" The studies are clear on this: TALKING, just TALKING, on a cel phone is the same as being drunk and driving. Texting while driving HAS to be 10 times more risky. SOFA KING WE TODD ED. Still looking for that train horn install... |

Wow- that video was something. On one level, funny to watch, but the seriousness of TWD is there too. I kinda wish they would've put in some statistical tables showing crashes, ages and deaths too. THANKS for that vid link! |

I'm lucky enough to live within walking distance of my job and when you walk to commute you have a lot more liberty to what's going on in cars. It's illegal to txt and drive in MN (even when stopped a at a stop sign or traffic light) and yet I see someone every day doing just that. |

It has been illegal in NY for a while too, they recently revised the law to make it stricter. I read the other day that some insurance providers are starting to not insure you if you have a texting ticket. |

The other day I was following a County Sheriff's vehicle. As we approached a 4-way stop intersection he made an aggressive move to the center of the roadway. I expected him to turn all the bells and whistles on and take off to some pursuit. I slowed behind him trying to decide if I could jump in the right turn lane... my direction home. Other cars at the intersection coming from other directions also noticed the odd placement of his car and sat at the light in anticipation of him making a mad dash. Finally after what seemed several minutes I entered the right turn lane. The cop was still idle. As I rolled up next to him he had his i-phone atop the steering wheel and was texting away. When he noticed my stare he floored it almost hitting the car across the intersection head on. All I could do was shake my head knowing us riders don't even have a sniff of a chance against the odds we face on the roadway today. Be careful out there kids, you are your only defense. |

retarded or not it happens all the time and it's not an automatic death sentence for everyone around the offending driver. |

Neither is it an automatic death sentence for everybody around a drunk driver. Do you want to be around somebody who'll blow, say, 2.5 on a breathalyzer? |

In Md. it is illegal to TWD , text or use a cell phone at a red light , or stop sign . That doesn't stop people from doing it .I See them in the morning driving down the road with the glow of the cell light . On the ride home it worse . More so at the traffic lights . This includes LEO . |

Boogiman, love ya man, just don't do it. How many times have I heard driving a car being equivalent to driving a weapon of mass destruction? Once went with my GF to visit her daughter, daughter drove us around Ft. Walton Beach area, she was texting the whole time. I was in the back seat. Can't tell ya how flinchy I was, but thank GOD, last I heard was she decided texting while driving was a bad idea, hope she does this no more. Once again, I must say, if you text and drive... "This includes LEO". Yep. TWD by anyone is a huge hot button of mine, but riddle me this, badwebbers, including any LEO that are on here: A number of times I've been behind or next to LEO's with a lap-top in the squad next to them. They are tip tip tapping away. Perhaps I am missing something here, but how is this any less dangerous than TWD? Buellathebuzzer-Minnesota had a fantastic series of PSA's re: TWD when I was up there last summer. I posted a couple links here. Are they still running these PSAs? |
