When my father passed I was given his 97' Sportster 1200s. I currently live someplace that if I were to keep the screaming eagle exhaust on, I would most likely be asked to leave. I was browsing craigslist and found some factory take off pipes from a 12' Sportster 48. My question... Besides plugging up the o2 bung holes with bolts, would there be any issues with mounting these up on my 97'? It seems that the 97 has a high cross over tube just under the breather, but the 48 has the cross over tube in the exhaust bracket. I'm just curios before I start tearing down the bike for the swap. |

Kinda cross topic, but I bet you could fit some type of db killers in the Screaming Eagles and hush it down a bit. I have no info about your specific question though, sorry. Just thinking. |

They will not fit. You need an exhaust from an '03 or earlier bike. The '04 and later bikes had a new frame and a rubber-mount engine; earlier bikes were rigid mount motors. Look in the S/E's. They have removable baffles; are the baffles in there? "Stock" S/E pipes are actually quite mellow, it sounds to me like the baffles were pulled at some point. |

SE's aren't *that* mellow - mine would set off some car alarms. As Rat pointed out, they will not fit. That lower crossover pipe is actually also a mounting point for the muffler. |

'That motorcycle is too loud' this is funny from the generation that claimed many things about freedom, rock and roll, and drug use, and trusting anyone over the age of 35 ..... Super Trapp stacked baffle from the disks that are tunable will work well. I had one on the stinger on my VW for the same reasons. I would pull the disks off at the trail head. http://www.supertrapp.com/find_my/results.asp the universals could be found cheep too I am betting. |

Make your own mount and they'll fit, I'll bet. They'll fit into the heads. (Message edited by Rich on May 10, 2012) |

I remember not too long ago seeing piles of stock mufflers in the dumpster behind my local H-D dealer's shop. If your bike was a later model, that's where I'd tell you to look. You might want to put a "want ad" on Craig's list in your area. I'm sure there's someone who still has a set of stock pipes for your bike siting in a corner of their garage or shed......I gave all mine away via Craig's list. |

I'll second checking with your local dealer's dumpster or just ask the guys in the shop, they toss brand new ones into the trash. All the older ones used a 'T' bolt in a long slot along the back of the can, allowing fairly universal fitment. Sorry but I can't remember what my rubber mount '07 used. If you want 'some' noise from the newer mufflers, use a decent size hole saw and two 12" extensions to remove the huge restrictor washer welded into the mufflers. You might only need one extension if it's off the bike. Louder, but not annoying like most aftermarket setups. Used to get a lot of questions as to where the mufflers came from because it seemed to make a good compromise between annoying and stock |
