Hey folks- I just looked through all 3 available parts in this series (2 more coming apparently)... the one about Cherokee, E. TN and W. NC was super fun for me! The other series, with "Mamaw's Hands", is great too- that pic brought tears to my eyes... Take a look at all of them, and enjoy! http://www.npr.org/blogs/pictureshow/2012/05/07/15 2180775/the-visual-south-part-iii-tourist-towns |

Well, heck, thought there were a few photographers here on BW, and peeps who like eye candy, and folks who enjoy southern Appalachia, oh well. Bump. Guess no one wants to have NPR cooties or something. |

"Oxford American Magazine" is where the good stuff originated. |

Funny caption on the first pic... "Kudzu lines a sleepy roadside in Cherokee, N.C., 2009." Sleepy heck. That is a very busy street come Summertime, being it's right outside of Smokey Mountains National Park. Tourist trap city, literally. Nice place though. |

Not too far from one of my all time favorite campsites...

Thanks for the pics, Blake! Kinda weird to see places I know from memory showcased like that... now that Cherokee has expanded (with a Ruth's Chris no less), those roads are more choked than evaar. For now, I can still ride E. Miller's Cove/Walden Creek to/from here to Pigeon Forge without the tourists. Then back, head to the Y, turn right and look for Parson's Branch to kill the boredom. Don't tell anyone.

That kudzu is nasty crap. I wonder how far along they have come in using it to make ethanol. |
