I know this was discussed fairly recently but I can't find anything on it in about six searches so I reluctantly started a new thread. I've had my current dinosaur about five years and the wife has gotten me to text but the thing I'm really after is pictures. My current phone has 2meg pics and most of the newer phones have 8meg which will be wonderful.

Here's what I would like to use it for:
1 Pictures
2 Talking (of course)
3 Texting (up to 10 a day)
4 Games (mainly for the kids)
5 Music (would be nice sometimes to have it but I already have an ipod)

What wouldn't be of much use:
1 Surfing the net
2 Watching movies

Also, I'm switching to Verizon because at&t has dropped way too many calls. I've been looking at the Razr and a co-worker has a Samsung Galaxy that's pretty nice. What are you all using?

Oh, and I'm not in a big rush to get it but there are some good Mother's Day sales going on.

Honestly quite often its the software driving the camera that matters. great resolution is useless if the focus sucks.

That said i think the Iphones far and away have the best overall photo taking properties.

No need to flame, you are correct, mega pixels mean nothing, regardless of it being a phone, webcam, point and shoot, or DSLR. It is the things you will never hear about like the lenses and sensor quality that make up the quality of the picture. iPhones are above average quality, and everything else is a crapshoot. Some phones have fantastic cameras, some have garbage cameras. Still, none can replace a dedicated camera, the cameraphone is only good for the convenience factor.

...and that's what I'm after, I just want the best one at the time. Every day I've got my phone in my pocket, and every day my kids or dog do something I'm glad I have a picture of.

Camera? Where is it? Is the memory card full? Are the batteries charged? Who used it last?

Phone? Yeah, it's in my pocket. Your's? Yep in the pocket.

Thank GOD Froggy, someone I can agree with on phone megs pixels and pic quality. Or lack of pic quality.
I do not know how your area is for phone service. I got screwed by AT&T and Verizon. I will never go back. But that is me.

I'm with Sprint now and I know how some people feel about Sprint. I haven't been bent over by them yet.
I have a Motorola Photon.
All of the above that you have listed works well except for pictures. Day time pics are not bad. Night time even with flash on suck.
There are a few other things I do like and don't like about it.
My family liked the Photon so much that we are all using them.
Over the last 8 years it has been the best out of the last 6 phones I have owned. Some of them were junk.
Including the Iphone that I had to carry for work. Easily broken.
My kids Razr was slow compared to what we have now.
My wife had the Samsung Galaxy, She liked it. I hated it. I would download music and it would lock up. My wife on the other hand never had a problem with it.

Good luck with your choice. It's a crap shoot when someone wants to sell you something.

Best picture hands down is from iPhone.

I have a droid. My wife does as well. Both have 8+ MP cameras.

The pictures SUCK.

If photography is high on your list of features, iPhone is the way to go.

(I despise Apple products BTW.)

If you decide on the iphone i would wait for a month. There has been a lot of talk that companies have been ramping up production of a yet unannounced apple product with thoughts that it will be a June release. This would be a surprise as Apple has been an every 6 months release for the last few but if the iphone 5 releases in June it may be worth the wait.

reasons being most likely the 5 will be better and the 4S will drop in price.

**** This is just speculation on release date

The biggest reason to wait is 4G.

It makes a HUGE difference.

Not with Verizon.

The downside is that they lobotomize their phones.

I personally wouldn't say hands down iPhone, but it is hard to beat. Check out this comparison of the iPhone, HTC One X, and Sony Xperia. Both the 4S and X take great pics, some the 4S does better, some the X does better, the Xperia just doesn't seem to be even close in my opion despite having a several megapixel advantage.

Here is a picture I took with my Motorola Xoom tablet last year, I need to take some good ones with my current tablet:

4G LTE and 4G Wimax is plentiful in NY metropolitan area, and in most of NY's larger cities like Albany and Syracuse. It is faster than the cable company connections in some areas, but as adoption starts to pickup it is getting slower.

I really like it. That said, I am a recent escapee from the Blackberry plantation.

I was a 10 year loyal user. Then I got fed up with the lack of connectivity, interoperability, etc.

Blackberry has been on the market longer than any other smart phone. Given that, there are only about 10% of the applications available for the Blackberry vs. every other smart phone.

The upside of the droid platorm is that the application market is open, not controlled by the Apple mother ship. This means LOTS more choices.

The down side is that some of these applications don't work and play well with other applications. I've had to fix some nasty conflicts on my droid that I am fairly certain wouldn't have existed on an iPhone.

The droid platform can be pulled apart and set up the way you want (rooted) with alternative operating systems. iPhone cannot.

If you are not a techno-nerd, none of that will make much of a difference.

I would spring for a model with the Super AMOLED screen.

4G is thirsty. My wife has the Droid Razor. Great for design. Sucks that she can't add a supplemental battery. I have the Droid Bionic.

I would spring for the Razor Maxx with the 85% larger battery (3300mAh).

One important thing to know is:

It's cheaper to buy your phone outright (from amazon or whatever) and pay your bill as you go.

I found out about this AFTER my phone was picked up >: (

Run the numbers. You'll see.
If you can swing $400 for a phone up front that is....

I've been with Verizon for over 10 years.

I get a $100 coupon to apply toward my phone every two years (used to be every year until 4G). Most phones cost $199 with 2 year activation. $99 for a phone every two years ain't bad.

My package rate is the same whether or not I bring my phone. I doubt I can buy any phone for $99 or even $199.

Sprint is great if you never travel or if you travel to only large metropolitan areas. Where I go, the folks who have Sprint on my team borrow my phone.

I rolled through BFE Oklahoma using my phone as a mobile hotspot.

Three people tethered off my connection and never lost a beat.

If you've never been to Western Oklahoma, it looks like this:

Sprint and Verizon use the same network technology but different frequencies, if your preferred carrier isn't available but another one is, the phone should automatically hop on the other network, it is called roaming, and sometimes there are fees if you use too many minutes/bytes

AT&T has 4G but the iPhone doesn't have 4G. That's the one thing they miss the most.

Yeah, great, it says "4g", but HSPA+ isn't 4G. LTE is where the future is, and the iPhone doesn't do that.

Verizon has been using LTE. Sprint is just beginning to switch over to that tech. Sprint has holes all over the place. There are several spots between Washington and Baltimore on I-95 that are dead-zones. It's completely unacceptable in a large metro area on a freaking main highway to have no service.

Just got home with a Razr and the wife a new iphone. I was debating on the two when I went in and was not planning on getting anything tonight, just asking questions. The salesman was very accommodating, of course that's his job, but he let me check out his personal Razr and gave me the pros and cons of both. He showed me several pictures he had taken and considering where I came from, a Sony Ericsson 750 I believe, so anything is better and the ones I've snapped off so far seem to pass for what I use it for. Thanks for all the info. and advice.

I went from a Droid Incredible to "The best, most advanced Android phone on the market, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus". What a POS!!! It has a great screen and does a nice job on the photos, but it has weird bugs and drops calls all the time. If I can find service to begin with, that is, which is never. My wife is an IT person and she always takes care of these things when I am fed up with them. She said "get rid of this piece of junk". I hate to, but will look at the iphones this weekend.

No, I couldn't justify the extra $200 for the bigger battery. The way I use it it should be good through the day. I'm trying to get my music on it right now but can't get mymoto to download to the computer.
