http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ul6Y88YmXSY&feature =relmfu Took a quick five-day trip from Wa to Ca. HWY 1 is the most gorgeous ride i've ever been on. the video quality starts out bad, but it clears up around 2:45. And yes, i'm slow... :P |

Nice video! We are talking about doing that ride this summer. Still not sure if we will put it together though. Of course we have to start from Illinois. At least I hear there's a mountain range in the way! |

At least I hear there's a mountain range in the way! i initially planned to ride up in the mountains... but it's april, and it seems all/most of the passes are still snowy didn't go to far, just down to santa rosa, then i had to get back to the house and get some work done around here. |

We were talking about hitting the coast just north of SF. I guess that would pretty much be Santa Rosa. North from there up to ??? We really haven't decided. It would be July/August for us, so I don't think snow should be a problem in the mountains. I dread the idea of going through Iowa and Nebraska though. |

you could check into going through arkansas - Northern arkansas has some great twisty roads that wind through the rugged hills. then cross into OK, Eastern oklahoma has some nice country roads too. IA and NE would suck for riding! if you head north from santa rosa, HWY 1 ends in legget at HWY 101, which is ok for a highway, but it is a highway. (HWY 1 isn't really a highway if you ask me) I-5 SUCKS! avoid it if possible. |

The Mendocino Coast part of that loop is almost certain to have fog in the morning. Suggestion; glue a piece of squeegee or windshield wiper to a strip of double sided velcro and strap it around the knuckle area of your left glove. Use it often. You will be surprised how quickly the outside of you face shield fogs up. G |

Highway 1 is a Great ride, 101 is just for making time, and easily circumvented almost completely by great roads. Start in San Francisco, Sausalito or Mill Valley, not Santa Rosa. Bypass Santa Rosa on the coast, unless you want to go through S.R. to ride some sweet mountain roads in from the coast. Going through Calistoga, St Helena and the like, look it up and find some roads and destinations that look good to you. |

Coastal fog probably considered rain by most people, when it rains you might think torrential downpour? Cool at night and in the morning, layer appropriately , sometimes a heated vest is nice in the am or evening, especially in the fog or if the wind picks up. |
