im looking to get a ducati. i have heard the 999 was not the best ducati. what is a good relaible ducati 2000 to 2006 thanks |

Gentleman Jon has a 999. From my understanding they are perfectly fine bikes, just not as "pretty" as the others and show it in value. I wouldn't pass one by if I were in the market. |

I am extremely satisfied with my 2005 999S. Even though it was not very popular when it came out, it is beginning to be sort of a cult model now, and the prices of them appear to be going up. I have found mine to be very reliable, and a better performer in every way than Lil' Blackie, which I suppose should not be a big surprise, as it cost just about twice as much new. As far as an investment goes, I actually had more money invested in Lil' Blackie, what with the fifty modifications that I made, than that I do in the Ducati, and got very little for the Buell when I sold it, due in part to the fact that Buell was no longer in business. Another Ducati that is a great machine is the 848, about the same performance and price as the 999.

I had the opportunity to ride a 999 at a Buell rally several years ago. I too would not pass on one if I were in the market for a Ducati. |

999's are a fantastic value now. You can get an "S" model with low mileage and great shape for under 9k if you shop around. I'd get one in a flash if I was in the market for another Duck. I also like the sport classics and the early 90's 900ss bikes. I have a sport classic that I really enjoy, but you have to shop around for them as they are getting very hard to find.

I have both a 996 superbike and an ST2. Stay away from the 998 they had early Testastretta issues.Some 998s would empty the crankcase oil into the airbox.they'd have poorly seated rings and have bad blowby.Also,stay away from any plastic,tanked Ducati's of late.It seems here in the states the gas causes them to swell.a lot of mad owners. I am currently resembling my ST2.first real service at 15k miles.timing belts,valve check,suspension service,oils and fuel pump service. I also delighted in building my 996.very expensive.on my 7th set of timing belts in 21k miles.I do them very frequently to protect my fiddle Desmodromics.the later Testastretta is better on timing belts with less radical bends. I have a 2002 998 Monoposto (solo seat). If you want the 916 styled bike the 998 is the model to get, it has the Testastretta engine with none of the rocker arm or camshaft flaking problems of the desmoquattro motor in the 916, 996 and 748 bikes. Service history is important and can be costly to upkeep if paying for all service needs. I have had one relay fail that lost lights and guages but was still able to get the bike home before dark and a quick connect fuel line failure. The 998 and newer bikes have the better engine and starting with the 1098/848 it was improved on again. Yep.what you said. I do my own service with OVER $7k worth of factory Ducati branded Tools including A complete Ducati Mathesis kit. |

I've never heard a bad review of the 999 from a rider perspective. I know they were popular from a styling perspective. I like them though. I don't like the Panigale and I own a Buell so i may have a screw loose. |

3000 miles on timing belts? Thats a race bike or a Museum peice. I like Ducs but I would rather ride than work on bikes. My local dealer has a sharp 916 price is not bad but you just cured my Duc fever My old M123T has 98k on it! original belt only parts changed so far are rocker gaskets in 99 primary to crank seal @ 96k The recall parts from 99 and the usual oil tires batteries and brake pads I resealed the S3 forks when I did the M123t Conversion. We rode 380 miles last sunday for lunch so 3000miles is up pretty quick. |

3000 miles on timing belts? That was done at the preference of the owner. Service interval is 6000 miles or 2 years for belts and valve adjusting, if memory serves me right. The Testastretta Evoluzione (848/1098/1198) has the interval pushed back to 7500 miles (Message edited by jumbo petite on March 30, 2012) |

Up until a few months ago I had a 2005 Monster S2R that I bought new in 2005. It was completely reliable. I used it for commuting, canyon riding, and touring. It never missed a beat. Had just shy of 20000 miles when I sold it. Yes, it had valve check intervals at 6000 miles and belt changes at 12000 (or 24mo). As stated above, the newer Ducatis have somewhat lengthened service intervals. Only you can decide if you are comfortable with the maintenance schedule. I would not hesitate to buy another Ducati. |

Aren't timing belts on Ducatis fairly simple to replace? Seems like they're readily accessible. |
