My 04 XB12R won't fire up.Cranks over fine. I don't hear the "computer rewinding" when I power it up. Haven't dug into it yet but hope it's just a fuse or relay(?) Figured here would be a good place to get some thoughts.

Check the relays first, you can use the high beam relay to check the function of the engine management system relay or starter relay as they're all the same.
Also they're the same as a late 90s Jeep.

Well.........nothing. Swapped out all the relays and checked all the fuses. Wondering if it's "voltage"? Slightly less than 12 volts when I was checking the fuses.Years ago, my X1 cranked fine, but would not produce a spark....due to low voltage while cranking.New battery cured that one. The XB9R fired right up for a little ride today. It has been sitting since October. XB12R has been sitting a lot longer.

Drop the 9's battery into the 12 and give it a go.

A 12-volt battery with a reading of 12 volts at the terminals is technically a dead battery, right?

Right. Ferris.

12 volts on a 12 volt battery will not start an engine.

Put a charger on it at 2 amps over night, and see if you have 12. 8 volts in the morning. If not, buy a new battery.

A twelve needs a good battery, kept on a battery tender, with a good stator and regulator to charge and maintain a charge.

I recently put a Shorai lithium battery in my Ducati 999s and it is a lot more powerful than a similar sized Yuasa.

The Ducati is also marginal in the battery department, and the lithium battery seems to start the bike better as it has a lot more cold cranking amps.

When you turn the key on, then flip the kill switch on, does the check engine light come on? If not, your ECM is not getting power. If yes, ECM is getting power, but for some reason it isn't telling the fuel pump to prime.

I "AM" getting a pump prime..very brief, like it's already up to full pressure.....which maybe it is? When the tender light turns green,I power it up up for a minute or so,with out starting it.. to take off a surface charge (silly me ?) and then let it top it off again. Wondering if the tender isn't compatible with the glass mat battery? Jumper cables will tell the tale....I suspect it is the battery. Think I'll go with a Shorai lithium battery.

Well crap.....it's not the battery. Starts and runs fine as long as I dribble gas down it's throat. Gas smells REALLY bad. Thinking the injectors are stuck/plugged up?

I'd look at replacing the fuel pump first, it sounds like it isn't providing enough fuel or pressure, hence not sounding normal when you flip the switch.

I'd drain it & put fresh gas in, with some injector cleaner, before buying new parts.

If you've the time use parts from your 9 to verify.

Check fuel pressure--should be around 50 and hold at that when pump cycles off.

I think the fuel pump is dead. Took the fuel line nut loose and "nothing". I may have mistaken the exhaust valve servo cycling on power up for fuel pump noise. Will check for power at the connector tomorrow.............fuses good tho. Have to take off the swing arm to pull the pump..>CRAP!!! What's a fuel pump worth? Looks spendy........
Why would it die anyways.....just sitting? It ran fine the last time I had it out.....over a year ago. With 4 Buells,I kinda saved that one back.

Let's blame it on the corn-based stupidity added to gasoline.

Nope! It will still be a tight fit, but it is doable with just disconnecting the shock.

I did a complete service on my '05 pump
Last year.you must at least drop the shock.I droppedEVERYTHING.
Made a fancy puller too except you can just pull it out by hand.. puny little filter.

Try & fix it first you've nothing to lose.

I have no idea if that pump is used on other vehicles but it may be that you can find a cheaper alternative.

Get all the numbers you can off the pump & plug them into google to cross reference.

Example, when the fuel pump on my FJ1200 died it was replaced with one for a Suzuki Super Carry pickup, at less than half the cost.

Another thing if you have the time & the contacts is to take the pump down to your local autoparts store & ask them if they've anything similar, you can do the same at the breakers yard too.

Most vehicle manufacturers use off the shelf parts from third party suppliers, as they're much cheaper than specific use parts.
The trick is finding who else uses that part & what for.

Yeah yeah, it's been said many times that I'm a tightwad, not true, I'm just allergic to paying more than I have to.

So I strung up the XB to the floor joists with ratchet straps, loosened the rear axle and pulled the lower shock bolt, lowering the swing arm.The pump does come out with a little fudging. Man is it ugly, The pump motor was stuck with varnish.I hooked up my charger to the terminals and tapped on the pump body and it eventually spun up........but I don't think I want to use this pump....just too lousy with goo.

How do I clean the tank? The bottom 6 inches is green with tacky/sticky varnish. What "cuts" that crap and in cheap volume. I'm guessing I'll have to put the old pump back in to plug the hole and them put a couple gallons on "cleaner " in to soak it off.

All most all the gas for this bike (as well as it's miles)came from out of state. Pretty sure a lot of it was ethanol based premium. Kinda sucks to be had by fools with no way around it.

Wow,that is ugly.Dealing with a Hayabusa right now at shop that sat for a year,he put Stabil in it but oh,is it ugly.Had to toss the pump.Fortunately I had another complete assembly with a bad pump as all the fuel level sender and such was covered in rust and gunk.Still waiting on some stuff from Eastwood to try and save the tank.Thankfully he had not tried to start it and injectors and such were clean.

Sta-Bil makes a couple of ethanol specific products. A little late now but...

Given the condition of the pump at this point it probably couldn't hurt to try carb cleaner.
