I'm thinking of going on a few moto camping trips this year. Long story short: I want to shoot astro-lapses with my cameras and Uly. Basically I camp out with my cams as they record the night sky.
I'm not a fan of tent camping, but I can sleep in a hammock. I figure it can be easy to set-up and cheap/small/light for moto based camping operations. I know a hammock is a simple device, but I'm sure there are some tricks to making it cheap, comfy, dry and moto packable.
I have seen some videos/reviews of the Hennessy Hammock. It looks really slick and I could easily spend 250 on a kit. The cheaper, the better.
Any suggestions. recommendations, hammock stories and snide remarks are welcome.
Im about 5' 10" 240lbs and the Uly is orange. (Fastest color)
I have done a fair amount of tent and hammock camping. Hammocks are nice because they take up less space/weight and get you off the ground. Downside, you need trees or some other anchor system to keep them (you) off the ground. For my canoe/kayak trips this the way I go. Easy to shelter too but harder to "wind proof" than a tent. I have several hammocks from simple, open nylon pack ones to full on jungle setups. The jungles feel ever bit as claustrophobic as a tent IMO, just off-ground.
The up side of tents is being a good bug barrier (yeah, I live and primarily recreate in the NE).
Barker: Only one I had a small Nylon mesh hammock rolled up it was base ball sized, I got to the jekyl island area ( around Brunswic GA ) found a beach with a breeze about 3 am tied it up between 2 palm trees with bushes and crashed woke up at day break got out of it looking down I had slung it up over some bayonet bushes, better to be lucky than good. the hammock is definitely the way to go cant recommend a current one the nylon one I had was good though and cheap..
This is a cot and not a hammock but you can set it up anywhere, even on rocky ground and it is supremely comfortable. Packs very small and is easy to use. http://www.luxurylite.com/cotindex.html
I have a Hennessy hammock (Expedition model) and really like it. Use it in the yard mostly, but I have camped with it. It packs down really small and would definitely fit on the Uly. There's also an optional rain-fly just in case. And the instructions are printed on the storage bag to make setting it up a piece of cake. It's not insulated, so you may want to bring a blanket or sleeping bag.
Hey Matt I love that Astro time lapse stuff!! I understand the way to take the pictures and the rig used, what software is recommended to put it all in motion? I know nothing I have right now will allow me to do that. I'd love to do that myself.
I got a jungle hammock from Cheaper Than Dirt and with a little para cord,a small tarp and some imagination you can kind of make a little porch to hang out under to get dressed if it is raining. Loved the video. Thanks for letting me take a trip without acid and a time machine back to the mid '80'sI would love to see that on IMAX!
I have a Hennessy Hammock as well, better than a tent unless you need to sleep with a friend.
Check out youtube - easily converts from an enclosed hammock to an open air hammock to a camp chair all depending on how you fold it, and all under the cover of the rain fly - pretty nice to be able to sit and cook something and stay dry in the rain.
I also have the "snake skins" - they are a MUST have. The hammock stays dry and never touches the ground during setup or takedown in the rain.
