Best pizza I ever had was in Rockaway, NJ Telemark Pizza 533 Green Pond Road, Rockaway Township, NJ 07866 (973) 627-6342 The owners spend part of the Summer back home in Italy, so call before you order. Cheese, sliced Italian sausage, with garlic and onion. I'm drowning in saliva here as I type this. |

Here in Germany I have enjoyed some of the best pizza and Italian foods ever. Guess it helps that we have people that just moved from Italy to here. They love cooking their pizzas in wood fire, coal fire, you name it fire ovens. Oh my God, talk about an amazing taste. I will miss this place when I leave. Then there is the German food, French food, etc... |

I like Chicago style pizza, but I am a self-admitted NYC-style pizza SNOB. In all of my travels, I've discovered that the farther you get from the NYC metro area, the WORSE the thin-crust pizza gets. Once I'm out of the area, I've found the only way to make a non-NYC thin crust pizza palatable is to SMOTHER it in other ingredients... in other words, what we used to call in college a "Garbage Pizza." Everything but the salty hairy fish. |

What's wrong with Anchovies? I love those salty little bastards. You can keep the ham and pineapple, though. If the Pizza is really good, it needs nothing beyond sauce and cheese. |

>>>Will do I may just pop over this afternoon!!!! Let me know how it is . . . we're booked to see Act of Valor at Menlo Park or I'd go today also. I may slip over tomorrow . . depending on your experience. While Blake is a Texan . . . . and I appreciate the risk we are taking as we risk taking pizza advise . . . well, I've watched him eat right here in my dining room and can vouch for his qualifications. He's as tasteless as I am and shares my low standards . . he's just a lot smarted. By the way . . . . I tried to explain the culinary standards that Mike (Rkc00) and I hold ourselves to on our various road trips to a group last night. By the time I got half way through they were rolling about, laughing with tears in their eyes. I must add that I wasn't like this before I met Mike and Blake . . . I was an innocent construction worker from Kansas who's been nearly ruined by Texans and the folks from Lawn Guyland. |

Pretty good stuff........if you like to wait in line.. Just_ziptab, the secret there is to bypass the normal waiting line and get a stool at the bar, (they will allow you in the door to do that), and have a beer or two while waiting. We've done that many times. Bob |

Here in the Gateway city the locals make pizza with "provel." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provel_cheese I'd rather chew on a dirty sock sprinkled with battery acid than eat local pizza. |

Mission accomplished. Well what do ya know a good Ol Boy what knows bout a slice a pie Telemark is a typical ma&pa NJ Pizzeria with the ol world feel and a wonderful slice of thin crusted pizza. The gentleman his wife and daughter all real Italians might I add were fine company. The Pizza is a true NY style very tasty, not to greasy just greasy enough. He doesn't overload the oregano you spice it the way you want. I am a purist so I don't care for spiced up pizza pie.All in all a wonderful taste and a nice ride out there greenpond road is a nice driving road. The ma&pa Brooklyn and Queens places have much the same feel once inside. The buildings there are concrete not log cabins and there is more hustle an bustle but sometimes a quiet bit and a chat about the Seria A and going down memory lane about my trips to Italy does the soul good. I rate it very very good.

Ok Court- that's truly fascinating. I should've noticed in both pics that it wasn't mesquite wood burning, or any other type of wood... Pray tell, how was that oven constructed? When? Dang. You are truly a blessed man. Give that pretty woman in the pics a big hug and a kiss, as my proxy. |

I don't know how anyone can declare New York the winner. The simple fact that Froggy takes Ny's side has turned me off from ever wanting to try it. Why would anyone listen to someone who doesn't drink beer or coffee and thinks an electric grill is superior to gas or charcoal? |

I believe that New York pizza is probably good. This post was simply an attempt to learn more about it as the few slices I have had were obviously poor examples of it. I have found the best pizzas are usually from smaller places where the owner is in the kitchen. You can taste the passion put into every detail. The weird thing about pizza is there are so many crappy ones out there. You put cheese on something and people are going to eat it. |

Oh, and can we all agree that Courts pictures were fake? What a joke .. I am so sure they are fake I will even volunteer to go spend a week in front of that oven to make sure its fully operational and what not. |

I agree. Even from frozen pizza or chain places, I cannot recall ever having bad pizza. Some pizza is better than others, but all are good. I do agree about the small places being the best. I recently had some pies from Frank Pepe's in Yonkers, NY. They are a true pizza joint, that is pretty much the only thing on the menu, and they cook in a oven so huge it would make Hitler jealous. It takes several people to hold the giant spatula used to fetch pizzas from the back of the monstrous oven. The pizza was thin and crispy, and even the unusual toppings I had like clam were delicious, despite how much I hate seafood. http://pepespizzeria.com/ |

So sitting in front of a misshapen pizza makes NY a winner. Sorry we dont need a gimmicky pizza here in the windy city |

I have to side with Team_ruthless. Can one who thinks electric grilling is good and doesn't drink beer really judge a pizza? Being some sort of clown pizza doesn't really help matters. Can a pizza even be fully judged without a beer? That's like eating a hot dog without condiments! |

Now, I gotta defend Frogs here a minute- given the number of posts he's put up regarding food, and what I know of his ability to consume it, I trust his judgement- even though I agree that someone who avoids coffee and beer has some clear deficiencies... +1 on the mom and pops... Metro Pizza in Alcoa was started by a fella named Sal (retired in FL now IIRC)- they serve beer, but if he knew you (he knew most of his clientele), he'd go back behind the counter and pour you some of his stash of red wine, in a paper cup, gratis. That kind of stuff makes ALL the difference. |
