Hey all. Watching the weather. They say West Liberty, Kentucky, home of Hillbilly Ed, has been leveled. Just seen video of the funnel cloud, it looks like it went right over his place. Another report says it's a mass casualty event.
Can't get through on landline or cell. Storm's over for them but the pictures coming in on the Weather Channel of West Liberty do not look good. Wait 'til daylight and cross our fingers, say a prayer is about all we can do.
Been pretty crappy in the general Appalachian region today- glad to say my honey's snoring now, and the dog, after waves of destructive weather passed through today- since around 2 in the afternoon.
Usually the land immediately north of Knoxville gets hit hard, then south KY, and then VA and NC where they meet TN...
In Kentucky, similar scenes played out as Gov. Steve Beshear declared a statewide emergency and ordered the deployment of 50 National Guard troops to join a 12-person team searching for survivors in Morgan County after authorities reportedly lost touch with the town of West Liberty.
Shawn Harley, from the National Weather Service, said people were trapped in damaged buildings after a tornado. There was no immediate word on casualties as a result and authorities lost contact with the town, said Chuck Wolfe, a spokesman for the Kentucky Emergency Management Agency.
Wolfe said officials believe the town "got hit pretty heavily."
At least 12 people were killed during the storm in Kentucky, though authorities warned the death toll could climb as daylight breaks.
Morgan County took a hard hit from Friday's storms. Firefighters there confirm at least three people are dead. This comes just two days after an EF2 tornado left a lot of damage. Friday's damage looks even worse.
"We could see it. It was just big clouds forming and we could see it forming and twisting. And we stood in our yard and watched it twist over. And it came right towards West Liberty," described Darlene Young. She was one of many living in Morgan County who watched as West Liberty crumbled under strong winds and hail.
"We headed out for town. To go to the courthouse. And then we got over there, it blew the windows out, so we had to go into a little back room," said Connie Bressler. Her family left their home, expecting to use the court house in West Liberty as a safe haven. Shortly after Bressler and her husband arrived there, they say a tornado touched down. "We went back into a little back room where's there's a little heavy metal table and got down in it, but I still got grit in my eyes and grit down my throat."
Emergency crews set up a triage center for people who are hurt. It is located in the center of town. Firefighters confirmed three deaths as of late Friday night.
Crews from Morgan County and troopers with Kentucky State Police drove in to help. As of late Friday night, there was no cell phone reception in the area.
My best to all who suffered damage or injury from those nasty series of storms.
We seem to live in what I am now calling 'lucky valley'(so far). The storm hammered my brother's location South of Oak Ridge. They personally had little damage that they know of as of now. The storm cell that hit them came due East 65 miles then weakened as it covered the last five miles to where we live.
All day long was a concern, major damage causing winds and rain to the North of us and passing to the South. We only got about a half inch of rain that came in a few five minute storm blasts.
My hat is off to the weather stations getting proper warning out to all of the communities in Tennessee that were affected. Many small towns had as many as ninety homes destroyed with no injuries.
Those folks in Illinois and Kentucky have really suffered with this series of storms.
Still no phone reception. Best to stay off the lines anyway. I imagine, as everyone else, Ed is in the thick of the emergency operations. Fingers crossed.
Ed and Cindy are doing good. Just got a message though the grapevine they and their home escaped damage but they're out looking for a generator. The rest of town not so good.
Spoke with Ed. They have the generator up and running. He said he would check the internet tomorrow from work... which was spared... depending on who you talk to that is a good thing....
Got a call from Ed last night. What Char said... he's got their corner of the world up and running. The gas station where we fill-up when we're out riding is just a 1/4 mile from Ed's. It was leveled Wednesday during the first tornado. Most of the places we visit/patronize in West Liberty are gone or mostly gone as of Friday's storm. Crazy weather.
Well, folks allow me to add a piece from my neck of the woods- IIRC this happened after the destruction in KY, but it was part of the same system...
At the end of TN 360, running south, I always look to my right to see who's at the KOA... when I saw the news pics, delivered from someone's cel phone, I kinda knew the landscape there...

TELLICO PLAINS, Tenn. — KOA Tellico Plains owner William Stokely is thankful, at least, for the timing of the tornado that struck Monroe County on Friday.
The storm leveled the empty commercial campground a mere two weeks before it was to open for the season, Stokely said.
"I think God was looking out for some people," he said.
More than a dozen structures on the 30-acre site, including 10 cabins, two lodges and the main office building, were caught directly in the tornado's path after it swept through downtown Tellico Plains and crossed the Tellico River.
The National Weather Service has since confirmed the tornado was an EF-2 with winds up to 130 mph. Its path was 400 yards wide and 14.6 miles long. No major injuries have been reported.
Stokely estimated the value of the damaged and destroyed structures, all built within the past 10 years, at more than $1 million.
He said he doesn't know how long it may take to rebuild. But the campground owner said he offered praise in Sunday school this morning that the storm didn't strike after he had opened for business, when the toll might have been much higher. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I do hope that this fella, and all affected, recover 150% and saddle up for a good '12.
