Anyone ever had one? We were at the pet store and my daughters in love. I have never had one and would rather have a larger dog but what can i say the little bugger is cute. Anyway just wondering if anyone has experience. Also I have never bought a pet and have always adopted but it's hard to tell the 15 year old and the two year old no on this one..... | ||

a) do NOT buy from a pet store. Ever. never ever. They are all from puppy mills and you may think you're saving this dog by buying it, but what you are really doing is giving the puppy mill the cash flow they need to keep doing this. Bad breeding with no regard to health or temperment. There are some pet stores who may work with local breeders with a good program, but they are few and far between. Not to mention, you'd probably spend a LOT less money going straight to a breeder than through the pet store. b) Puggles are a "designer" breed (I'm sure you knew that), and what that means is, while you had two purebred parents (or perhaps grandparents as some of these types of breeds can be 3/4 one thing and 1/4 the other), you aren't getting a dog that's been specifically bred for any traits other than cuteness. So, what does that mean with a puggle? Well, it's good news and bad. A Pug is an EXCELLENT dog, probably one of my favorites as a small breed. My mom has one, Jackie, who we got when I was 14 years old. 16 years later and she's still getting around. Tons of fun, easy to train, easy going dog. However, in my limited experience, Beagles are on of the biggest pains in the ass breeds there are. Great if you want the dog to hunt with you, annoying if you just want a pet. My brother has two Puggles from two different breeders. They are a handful (but that's likely more to do with my sister-in-law's opposition to "mean" things like crate training... or any training in general). But they are lovable, sweet dogs. They did make their way through an ENTIRE living room set before they settled down. Anyway, the point is in a mixed breed you get a toss up of traits from any of the breeds present and in any amount (could be 25% beagle 75% pug... or 99% pug and 1% beagle), regardless of what the dog looks like, so be prepared to end up with something that behaves either like a total pug or a total beagle and you'll be ok. Puggles are pretty popular - have you tried looking on pet finder to see if there's one near you that you can rescue instead? I'd bet that your kids would melt over any puppy if you put in their lap. I have a purebred pug, and she is one of the sweetest animals on the planet. Damn-near human facial expressions, and one of the nicest, most wonderful companion breeds out there. I've always been a "big breed" guy...but Kelsey's made me fall head over heels in love. I had a beagle growing up. Two, actually....the one I remember, Lucy, was a PITA. Dug out of the fence all the time, and...let's face it...a beagle is a hound. Barked, howled, made noise constantly (I have yet to hear Kelsey actually bark, and she's SIX). The first beagle tried to kill me. Herman. I was a toddler, Herman was there "first" (my folks had him before I was born), and to assert the fact he was the Alpha, he pushed me into the pool. Apparently I sank like a rock. Of course, this was the same dog that would zero in on a seagull, keep his eyes locked on-target...and run full-tilt-boogie off the end of the dock into the Gulf. I have to agree with XL here - your kids will love ANY pup you toss at 'em. Rescue one. My Morgan is a black-and-white-something (border collie, maybe?) that I rescued from a mill in TN. One eye, goofy side of her face (that side's nostril and ear are not right either)...but another complete sweetheart. They know. They understand when you save them, and they show their appreciation. Every. Single. Day. My Aussie mix has been thanking me for 17 years now, and he's still goin' strong! | ||

+1 on the pet finder. Any dog you can imagine is sitting in a shelter somewhere and they do seem to understand that you saved them. | ||

2 of our local pet stores have dogs and cats for sale through the local shelters so it is not fair to say never buy from a pet store. I would find out if they do get them from shelters and go from there. If they don't then I would stay away. If Petfinder comes up blank for a Puggle look into reputable breeders. My friend has one and really likes it. Seems the beagle is there just to add some size. Good luck with your search. | ||

Thanks for the info. For the record I am very aware of Petfinder and have used it to find past animals. All of our cats are rescues. I will not be getting the puggle. I will either adopt one or get it from a local breader/lady my friend knows. She breeds her pug once a year and I know she is an avid dog lover. I am familiar with pugs i just don't have experience with the puggles. The problem with adopting pugs is they get gobbled up by local pug rescue groups that have denied me do to my 3 cats and my young child. They are sooty at best. It irritated me we are a good family that treats our pets as family members. Anyway that's another story. | ||

+1 on Pugs, my westie's favorite breed. If she sees one at the dog park she plays with it until it runs out of breath. In the old days, if a australian shepherd got a hold of your springer spaniel you had a litter of mutts to give away. Now they charge premium prices for "designer" dogs. | ||

 my puggle, IZZY. best dog i've ever had. worst thing she's done is wake me at night looking to be fed. other than that, affectionate, obedient, generally quiet, follows me around and is great with kids. got her from a shelter 4 years ago. if only she could catch a frisbee..... | ||

We were given orders by city hall to cut our animals in half. We have two weeks to get 20 dogs adopted out, or we will have to put them down. - That nice talk for KILL THEM. I adopted a pit puppy and a Beston. The Beston(Beagle/Boston terrier mix), is awesome. Great all the way around, but I don't agree with designer dogs, and would Never pay for one. |
