Looks like the UK is trying what BO is promoting here. Equally predictable results. 50% top tax rate - the wealthy find ways to avoid the confiscatory rates - tax revenues actually fall. This is the Laffer curve in action, proven in the real world again. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance /consumertips/tax/9097219/50p-tax-rate-failing-to- boost-revenues.html |

The number of deluded Americans is growing where they believe that taxing the rich will solve our problems. It won't. Just the opposite will happen where we all become poorer as capital flees to friendlier climes. That is the Socialist dream of "fairness". Most people, including some Badwebbers, don't have clue one where their jobs come from. Deny the veracity of the Laffer Curve at your own expense. |

Or as Margaret Thatcher so famously noted: The trouble with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.

My wife recently decided to become a socialist. Her hour long commute spent listening to the wrong radio station has taken its toll. All I can think of when she talks is you can't possibly believe this crap. My question is how do you argue with someone whohas been brainwashed to dismiss simple things like logic, fact or reasoning? I have been with this woman 15 years and love her very much I just hope I can save this relationship. she makes decent money so I guess the plus side would be that she would have no problem paying alimony if we split. It's only fair, right? |

Team... don't argue with her. Listen to her and explore some of the problems. Socialism / liberalism is great on paper, so don't argue theory. I just never works in practice, and the devil is in the details. Thats where NPR is brilliant... they do a wonderful job of positively describing the happy path in the way that keeps people from thinking about all the problems in the world view they promulgate. I give them credit... my only beefs are that they pretend to be unbiased but arent (I wish they would just be honest about it), and that they collect tax money from 100% of Americans, but only try and effectively represent 40% of them. I wish we had an equivalent voice on the conservative side. Articulate, thoughtful, positive, and non confrontational. |

It will sure be a happy time when you can ride down the road and see all the lazy liberal bums trying to scratch a meal out of the garbage dump, when the money is gone that is where they will be. |

Millions dead in Ukraine from a forced Socialist Kollectivization of the private farms, and central planning of quotas, forced export, prohibited emigration - one of the worst starvattions that I bet she has never heard of Socialism looks great on paper.... Not to anyone that has critically read those papers. And this twit is all about recreating it - from the cult of personality, to the nationalization of industries, perks to the chosen apparatchik, slander and seizures against the opposition.... and coming down the pike , if he is true to his Leninist roots - ginning up the mill of killings. |

Now that I think about it maybe she is just doing this so I will hurry up and mount those tires on her buell. Two hours a day commuting on a motorcycle with no radio! |

Socialist policies . . . gosh, like the ones we're currently seeing foisted upon us . . . are like skydiving without a chute. You jump out . . . .the view is spectacular, the best you've ever seen . . . there is no traffic, no hassles, no congestion . . . it's warm and the breeze is cool . . . comfy, nice, halcyon . . . you've got time to think about things while reflecting on the fabulous view and lack of crowds then . . . It's only fair, right? I'll see if I can pull the numbers, but taking the AGI of the top 50% would require a 49% NON-MARGINAL tax rate of every dollar earned by the top 50% JUST TO PAY THE 2011 FISCAL BUDGET. That doesn't do anything to even touch the deficit AND the taxes needed to be raised would increase by 8% for 2012 forward. Ask your wife how much she is willing to contribute. If she makes more than $32,000/year, she's in the "lucky" group that gets to fund the utopia she is advocating. |

Question for socialist leaning individuals. Do you think your employers taxes should be doubled? If they were, what do you think would be the result? Just for the record. A single person making less than $23,500 per year still pays about 7.5% in federal taxes. DAMHIK G |

Bill, >>> they collect tax money from 100% of Americans, but only try and effectively represent 40% of them. It's even worse than that. They collect taxes from 50% of working Americans, then give much of that to the 50% who don't pay taxes and then they represent them. Greg, >>> A single person making less than $23,500 per year still pays about 7.5% in federal taxes. We're talking about income taxes, not govt run retirement contributions. You should try being self-employed, the rate doubles. |

I never understood why as an independent you had to pay Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and Unemployment 'insurances' pretty much hobbles alot of the success that could be realized when you quit STEALING nearly a 1/3 of every paycheck, commission and nearly 1/2 of every bonus. IF you cant make it as an independent - I would rather have MY investments from those fund back to depend upon than the rhetoric and blather of a 'safety net' mentality. PS for those of you that think Big Brother is there to protect you - you haven't been paying attention - Go read up on the history and deaths of the menshiviks - OWS - you are useful idiots- cannon fodder as soon as their goals are met - It always has been, it will always be. |

"I can pay half the working class to kill the other half." -Jay GOULD I believe the progressives have adopted this strategy very well. When the austerity measures hit, who do you believe will be rioting in the streets, the top 50% or the bottom 50%? |

Gotcha Greg. So about 15% total, then for the self employed another 7.5% for a total of 22.5%. Didn't used to be that way. I hate SS tax. |
