Cutting the ears is for dogs that will be fought, or hunting dogs, especially for hog hunting. Otherwise leave the ears alone...tail too. I don't have much affinity for dogs in general. I was viciously mauled by a large dog when I was 6 years old. Guess what breed???? Bulldog, Right???? Wrong! Dalmation got me. I got him back..... eventually. |

My dog's tails are docked. They don't crop my breeds ears though. |

+1 on the Dalmation attack. When I was a paperboy, it was always the small little crappy dogs that would bite. Snowballs fix 'em! |

if you think a Pit Bull is like all dogs, then you need to go to the dog shelter and look to see how many Pit Bulls have been turned over to the shelters by their owners! It's really eye-opening and very sad to see. I just recently adopted a new dog (Cocker spaniel) and every shelter I visited was loaded with the Pit Bull breed. Apparently people purchase them and decide that they are not right for their family or lifestyle and then just drop them off at various shelters. I would certainly work with lots of early training with the dog to get the best results from the animal. Good luck with your new pet. |

Shelters are overloaded because people see "pit bull" on the breed and don't adopt. Ashley took Shelly to her first adoption day and saw this fist hand. One couple was even playing with Shelly and commenting to Ashley about how sweet and well-mannered she was. Then they read the information sheet and said "Oh, she's a pit.." and promptly walked off to look at other dogs. I've never been bitten but Ashley has... by the neighbor's lab. My cousin was bitten in the face by a pomeranian when she was a toddler. |

I'd be careful doing that. It cute, sure, but it teaches him it's OK to bite at your feet and socks, especially. This stage of his life is crucial for teaching what is and isn't allowed. |

+1 careful what you teach them. I used to let Kelee, the dane, chew on my old socks. When she got bigger we started finding whole socks in her poo. I had to make sure I didn't leave socks lying around anywhere she could reach them. That said; Awwwwww, sooo cute. |

Thanks Wolf, BadS1. He is a champ. BadS1, what kind of Mastiff is your boy. I am really wanting to get an Italian Mastiff/Cane Corso after I graduate. Just a little information I thought I'd pass on. We had a real problem with Devlyn tearing every toy that we bought him to pieces. We found that toys by WestPaw Designs under the "Hurley" line is absolutley the BEST. He and the other 'kids' have tried really hard to destroy it but not so much as even a tooth mark exist on them! http://www.westpawdesign.com/catalog/dogs/dog-toys /eco-friendly-dog-toys/eco-friendly-products/hurle y |

I volunteer at one of the nations largest pit rescues.....it amazes me how ignorant most people are about these dogs. Anyone who thinks for a second the breed is the issue, then they need to ask themselves if they are the issue. I work with dog that have been neglected, fought, starved, abused and shot to near death. Every one of these dogs need just one thing, human compassion. I have owned many breeds of dogs in my life and the pits are the ones that are most loyal, loving and caring animals I've ever come across. For anyone looking for a pit, PLEASE check out PBR oklahoma on Facebook....We have over a hundred dogs from all the the states including Mike Vic's dogs. It's very low budget operation so donations in food are always welcome. It's funny how the guys like Shorty from Pit Boss get on the TV because, I met him in person here in OK for a fund raiser we hosted, and he himself will tell you his operation is a JOKE! he has no more than 6 dogs at any given moment. Though he does help a few dogs in need, all he does is drop them off at another shelter for them to handle. |

Jim, I have South African Mastiffs. Also called Boerboels. They are not a AKC dog but rather SABT which is from Africa. This is a pic of my female.

Dalmation got me. I got him back..... eventually. Dals were one of the biggest victims of poor puppy mill breeding spawned by the 101 Dalmatians (spelled with an 'a', BTW ). They looked all cute in cartoons, but people forgot that, despite them being among the oldest breeds and their history a little shrouded, the most recent uses were for guard dogs of horse-drawn coaches and even faught as war dogs along American soilders in WWI. Take a dog with a guard dog background and pay no attention to breeding and novice owners who don't care and you get bad dogs which will bite, like you found. I hope your "I got him back" comment doesn't have anything to do with hurting the animal... Here's my girl at 9 weeks (she's a liver (brown) spotted Dalmation: And during a hike last winter (can you tell why they think they're related to German Pointers?): And playing with a new camera: She's a handful but almost annoyingly submissive - she just isn't capable of hurting anyone, unless you count her wayward tail or accidentally bumping her rock-hard skull into something. |
