odd, wonder why they chose that motor for the bike. neat that they did it, that they went through the work to make it work |

Ya, I mean it would take some mods to make that work. |

I got to wondering- why in the hell was the V-rod motor taken out to begin with? IIRC that was the "appeal" of the Destroyer- if you actually wanted to use it in its intended design capacity, if properly handled the motor was good for multiple runs, day in and day out, without worry of grenading or the need for a spare ($$$). It was always fun to watch/listen when our service manager got our Destroyer fired up, squirting it back and forth a few times in the parking lot- great shits and giggles... Oh well. |

" This is true, have several friends that run destroyers and run them hard for over a season with no maintenance required (some usually freshen things up in the off season to be safe, but one buddy had three seasons on a destroyer before 2nd gear failed) |

I can see a few reasons for a Buell motor 1. Weight (anyone know what the weights for just the buell 12 motor and the v-rod motor?) 2. Power. The Buell 12 is not a powerful as the v-rod but much more so than HD's other air-cooled offerings. 3. Fit. The buell motor is smaller than a big twin so it would be easier to get it to fit. I'm just guessing they blew the v-rod motor and decided it would be cheaper to buy a buell motor. Plus it'd be unique. It actually doesn't look too bad. |

"1. Weight (anyone know what the weights for just the buell 12 motor and the v-rod motor?) " Not sure of numbers, but the added radiator plus a gallon or so (??) of water. Gallon of water is about 8lbs IIRC, so looking at 20+ just in thermostat, water/coolant, hoses, and radiator. 20lbs isnt that much weight usually, but when youre looking at a motorcycle that weighs 500 lbs or so, its quite a bit |

I would of stuffed a Helicon in it, more power and less weight. The Helicon clocks in at about 157lbs, about 25lbs lighter than the Thunderstorm. I can't find any specs on the Vrod motor, but I bet it ain't pretty. |

I bet this is a weird project displacement. Here is my theory: need a VRod motor for some choppa. sell rolling chassis of VRod cheap. New guy buys chassis and installs the XB engine. Now we just need to find the empty XB chassis so that we can install a KH sporty engine in it! |

having just up graded my v-rod with a box of V&H goodies I dont think you will be able to keep up with it using a Buell engine(airkool)Just my 2 cents worth as I own one of each. |

"odd, wonder why they chose that motor for the bike." Final drive side matches the V-rod (?) |

I think the most likely answer would be cost if there was a failure of the Vrod motor... |

A quick image search shows every vrod pictured with the drive belt on the left side like the 1125R, so it was extra adaptation to make the bike right side drive Sportster/XB motor. |

Now I can't stop thinking of Buell XB with a flathead engine... Damnit. |

"The Helicon clocks in at about 157lbs, about 25lbs lighter than the Thunderstorm." Does that include the additional liquid cooled stuff - IE Radiators, hoses, fans, coolant etc Seems it'd be hard to add all of that and STILL be 25 less than the Thunderstorm 1203. While the Helicon most likely does weigh less than the VRod motor, I think the ease of bumping up the HP numbers would almost cancel out the weight advantages of the helicon (just thinking Destroyer parts added on to get much higher HP) Just spitballin' |

Well an 1125R weighs 20lbs less than a XB12R (both dry) google search shows coolant capacity = 0.8gal (don't have my manual with me) Call it a full gallon at 8lbs. Now there could be weight difference between the bikes other than the motors but I'm willing to bet that the engine makes ups a large part of the weight difference. Ha ha! I googled Roerh (who uses the v-rod motor) http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/roehr-motor cycles-1250sc-review-86824.html "Buell himself apparently considered using the liquid-cooled 1130cc V-Twin but declined because of the engine’s considerable weight of 197 lbs and its large size." That doesn't make clear if it is counting the radiators and plumbing or just the motor. (Message edited by notpurples2 on February 14, 2012) |
