The one who conceals hatred has lying lips, and whoever utters slander is a fool. Prov 10:18 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice. Prov 12:15 A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult. Prov 12:16 A rebuke goes deeper into a man of understanding than a hundred blows into a fool. Prov 17:10 Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent. Prov 17:28 A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion. Prov 18:2 There are more good "fool" proverbs, but some tend to reflect poorly on me, so I stopped at the above. |

Westboro mis-represents biblical verses and the OP ridicules this. People who are so narrowly focused as to miss this simple aspect of humor are going to be incapable of understanding ANY explanation. Trust me when I say I see the humor in the OP. Really I do. But what is it that really gets believers in the Bible upset with the WBP group? You said it yourself. They misrepresent biblical verses. Yes they find that offensive. Can you really not see that it's still offensive when the OP misrepresents biblical verses? It's the same offense. Why would you expect a different response? |

People misrepresent biblical verses all the time, its the fact that the wbc does so in hatred that gets people upset. And i dont even know if its that so much as that they preach about soldiers going to hell and god punishing them etc etc. The op was about something funny, make light of the wbc. As crusty said, i miss the old badweb, the religious and political drivel gets old. |

Slaughter- GREAT one!!! That pic, I mean... After that, you went WAAAYYYY off track! God Loves Okra!!! On a similar note, we watched a great show the other nite- "Heat Seekers"- where the two certifiably INSANE chef/hosts ate some "hot chicken" in Nashville (a local specialty)- it was called... wait for it... SATAN'S TONGUE!!!! Hey, at least I'm trying to stay on topic, food funnies and all... |

>>> drivel gets old I agree with the clarification that what I classify as drivel, is mostly when folks start asserting that what substantive issues others like to discuss is "drivel". The thoughtful approach is to avoid that which is uninteresting to you. I do it all the time here. The OP is humorous to some, to others it pokes an open wound. Personally, I can see both points of view, thus my opening posts. Thoughtful commentary to clarify why and refute what might be misunderstood is certainly worthwhile and in no way detracts from the humor. That such thoughtful dialogue offends some is odd. Tolerate all except those with whom you disagree? Then do all you can to diminish their beliefs and belittle their views. I can't subscribe to a code of hypocrisy. And i dont even know if its that so much as that they preach about soldiers going to hell and god punishing them etc etc. WBC is offensive simply because of their message. They are also offensive because the misrepresent the message of scripture. Those are separate things. Misrepresentation of scripture is offensive if it's done by WBC or to pick on WBC. It's mind boggling that someone is unable to understand that simple concept. Misrepresentation of scripture is offensive. It's pretty simple. |

Guell, You appear to be confused about what political correctness really entails. Political correctness is avoiding vocalizing your beliefs because even though absolutely valid or even objectively true, they tend to be "disrespectful" to others and therefore must be avoided to make up for past inequities and injustices. Mainly it means skirting truth in order to avoid offending some marxist cause of the day, some left wing political pet agenda. Avoiding misinformation is not PC. It's the exact opposite. So you see dear Guell, you are the one who is practicing political correctness in this thread, trying to stifle the valid and honest views that are offensive to marxism. Interesting commentary on the issue... http://archive.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2002/ 4/4/121115.shtml |

To you it is, to me it was a funny picture, and I didn't take anything about it seriously. You may not find it offensive. I would hope you are consistent in not finding offense if WBC misrepresenting scripture too. Being offended is one of the freedoms we have in the US. I see that as a good thing. |

I honestly don't pay that much attention to the wbc, I have better things to do. Do I think what they do is right? Nope, but I have better things to concern myself with. And blake, I'm not trying to stifle anyone's views or opinions. As I said I don't care what you believe or really what offends you. I was able to differentiate between satire and something serious though, which the peeps pic def isn't. |

Blake, while your info on the fig metaphor is enlightening (seriously, I don't mean that sarcastically), I'm not sure how it applies to the previously mentioned scripture. In that case, it doesn't seem to be a parable or metaphor of any kind. It's written like he was just there, doing just that. I don't see a lesson to be learned hiding anywhere...? ~SM |

I think you have to consider the story in relation to what J-sus was about to do and experience concerning the Jewish church. I highlighted in bold type some of the pertinent information in my previous post on the subject. So what you have is J-sus (who had foreknowledge of what was about to transpire) on his way to the church hoping to find it fruitful in accepting Him (true will of G-d), but the church was not accepting, rather it rejected Him (bore no fruit) on account of the Jewish church was not yet ready to do so. Why else would the authors of the Gospels include such a trivial and seemingly out of character account in their writings? Because in their day, they never imagined anyone missing the obvious allegory or take it out of context. |
