I own a 2008 silverado 1500 and wanted to pass on some valuable info regarding a problem I have just run into. Recently my truck threw a check engine light with a trouble code# 0446. My truck failed emissions and state inspection because of the code. #0446 is related to a bad Evap. vent selenoid on the gas tank. This part once failed needs to be replaced to be able to clear the code. Chevy has kindly created an updated part for this which runs $158 dollars and can only be purchased from the dealer. If you call chevy this is the revised part they will sell you for the fix. What they will not tell you is that they still make the original part and use it in suburbans, tahoes, and their full size vans. Cost of the replacement part is $34.00 and can be swapped out in about 15 minutes in your driveway. The revised part is roughly 2 hours of labor + $158 for the part. I was quoted $375 for the whole job. If your truck is under 80K they are required to fix it free of charge to comply with emissions, but for those of us high mileage drivers the fix is up to us. Also some even better news is there is an exact ACDelco replacement for $22 at any local auto parts store. Hopefully this can save someone else the way it saved me before i dropped almost $400 at the dealer for something i could do for just over twenty bucks. Here are the part #'s, they are good for all Chevy pickups '99 thru current excluding hybrids: GM # 25932571 $32 ACDelco # 2142149 $22 |

Thanks for posting. We have Suburbans, but both of my Dads have Silverado trucks. I've copied and e-mail your info to them. Love Badwebbers! Always full of good information. |

Had that go out on mine last year, quoted install was $600. Obviously I declined. Found a used one at the junkyard for $10. Pic for reference if you don't know what they look like. Mine was full of sand. The pic below isn't mine, but where the hose attaches is the part that goes bad, the bigger part is just a can with a filter.

There is a reason the part was redesigned. Replacing the vent solenoid with the same design will eventually cause the same problem. Yes the part is overpriced, no argument on that one. See bulletin #02-06-04-037I. The new vent solenoid includes a remote filter that keeps water and dirt out so the solenoid doesn't fail again. I have done quite a few of these repairs. Tom |

I agree with you Tom, the redesign is to eliminate dirt from getting into the solenoid, but the cost does seem a bit outrageous. The original one has lasted me 97,000 miles and if the new $20 part goes another 97K i'll be very happy. Perhaps if I were operating my truck in more extreme dirty conditions I'd be more willing to opt for the redesigned part, but quite honestly my truck has spent its entire life on job sites for the last 4 years and i'll take a chance on the same filter and see how it goes. My Intention in posting this info was more for people that would normally go to the dealer and not know any better then to hand over $300 plus on something they may not need to purchase. Being Buell owners we have a way of finding out when we are being screwed by the dealers.
