My wife is melting old crayons in a silicon device with little heart shapes for a school Valentines Day project. She was explaining it to me in advance and kept saying "crowns." "Sodie" is also from her childhood vocabulary down in the Ozark Plateau. Does anyone else pronounce crayons as "crowns?" |

Nope but i live in Northern Illinois where we slightly misuse the letter a such as in the word shicawgo spelled phonetically.(Chicago) In fact i can honestly say I've never heard crayon pronounced crown. I did have one annoying friend who pronounce library... Liberry which always irritated me. |

I know what you mean. I've heard both but it's more likely here that they're referred to as crayuns. I do my best to pronounce it the right way, it's just that dang E. Ky. accent. Drk, your friend and my dad could be one in the same. Drives my mom nuts. (Message edited by Kyrocket on February 06, 2012) |

She also uses "onry" rather than ornery. Re: Crowns. Apparently my male chauvinist selective deafness all these many years precluded me from ever hearing crowns instead of crayons. |

Moxnix Posted on Monday, February 06, 2012 She also uses "onry" rather than ornery. As do my wife and I; both born & raised in socal. It's just part of American dialects. Ever watch Swamp People? "Choot'em!" says Troy in a frenzy... It's all good bra'. |

I thought my sister was the only one to say crowns. The rest of the family says crayons. |

"Apparently my male chauvinist selective deafness all these many years precluded me from ever hearing crowns instead of crayons." "...buy the wine, share it and keep your mouth shut or you;ll be pooping Burnt Sienna and Mango Tango Orange for a week." My wife is from Idaho Falls, ID. I have to leave all of her funny speech alone. It's not easy, but I've learned. Both statements above reflect my lessons learned over the last 15 years. |

This a.m. my bride noted she does not say ignernt. The merlot is unopened on the countertop, yet there is peace. Plus a little inner peas and a modicum of whirled peas. Life be good. |
