I was wondering... I've got a 2stroke chain saw and weed eater... Even though I put in gas stabilizer in my fuel cans I don't think pump gas stores very well with all the additives and ethanol in it... Could you use race gas instead??? Would it store better and longer than pump gas??? Does all pump gas have ethanol in it??? Thanks, Kevin |

Get gas from a marina. Most of the time it won't have E |

I haven't had a problem with chainsaw (pump w/ethanol) gas keeping over the winter (and it does get cold here). |

We are seeing lots of problems on carbed motors the ethanol has a bacteria or something related to the water in ethanol which is creating algae in the float bowls of the carbs and plugging up the fuel system. There is a new Stabil brand stabilizer that is specific for ethanol fuel storage. You can also Google a list of gas stations in your area that still sell "real gas" here is a link http://www.goldeagle.com/products/10_oz_ethanol.as px (Message edited by preybird1 on December 18, 2011) |

It's kind of a waste of money, but the smell of race gas is worth it I'd stay away from ethanol if the tools are more than a few years old. I've had bad experiences with it chewing up the older plastic. |

I was told by the distributor that race gas stores very well for long term. On such little engines, just dump the gas and run it dry. Winter blend gas does not store well at all. It's made to evaporate faster in cold weather for better starting. That's why snowmobiles have so much carb gunk problems.........end of season and it's stored all Summer long with Winter blend in it...........regardless of Seafoam or Stabil. |

Algae? Weird....(learn something new every day) Guess it's too cold here for that. I may want to use 'old' race gas from now on. |

I don't think it's algae. I've seen the green crap first hand. I'm pretty sure it's a form a of corrosion residue from the brass jets and needles in the carb. I strongly suggest that you drain the tank of any 2-stroke and run it dry til the engine stops. The stupid crap seems to attack the diaphragms in the carb and makes them stiff. Stiff diaphragms= adjusting the carb all day in the spring trying to get it right/having to run it at partial choke all the time. This ethanol gas is seriously awful. Every lawnmower or weedwhacker I have opened up in recent years have has evidence of water in the gas. P.S. I thought the race gas went bad fast too? |

Long term storage of two-smoke fuel is out these days. Have not tried the newest Stabil stuff yet, but nothing I've tried yet has worked to stop the Ethanol separation and subsequent absorption of water (even Stabil products tried last year). AV gas is an option if you have a small airport nearby willing to fill a can(s). AKAIK in NY it's the only commercially available "gas" w/o 10-15% ethanol. Marine fuel went the ethanol way long ago. Fact is marinas were the first to report on the ill effects of long term storage. Nate is correct, you can no longer leave this crap-gas in your two-smoke fuel systems and expect to use them later. I too use the drain and run 'em dry method. Two-smoke fuel that will not be used w/in one month gets dumped into my truck/lawnmower/snowblower/other four-banger engine. I have rebuilt more chainsaw carbs in the last year......I should go into the diaphram/gasket market.....lots of opportunity there.....$10-30 per kit for something that probably costs 0.20 to produce and stock. Some carbs are getting rebuilt every 12-18 months with the "average guy" care. Lots of saws getting tossed to the curb for cheap, simple fixes too... |

I see in the linked page it mentions cars, trucks, small engines fuel injection/carbs, but no mention of 2C. There is a major difference and I don't take chances with my mix and saws. |

I always end up with several extra gallons of 100 octane unleaded race gas after our CCS roadracing season finishes up. I run it in everything until it's used up. The snowblower starts right up and the smell makes doing the work a little more enjoyable! |

Thanks Guys... I might try the race gas... I'll just have to be more careful about running everything dry before storage... Never had to worry about that a few years ago... |

It seems to me that this is just the thing that some imaginative attorney would turn into a class-action suit. Everyone I know that deals with the stuff (except corn farmers) hate it, from refineries to weed-eater users. I just eats up equipment. I'll go out on a limb here - I'll bet there is some rider in the ethanol bill that precludes claims for damage caused by the mandated addition of ethanol. |

Empty the fuel tank and fill with WD-40(from bulk 1 gal.container) then start and wait till it starts "4 cycling" shut off, dump the remaining WD-40 back in the can for later use. Standard procedure for shutting down any alky/methanol fueled racing motor 2 or 4 stroke(dirt track/drag race) and works the same for small engines short or long term storage. |
