No Nativity this Christmas in Washington D.C.

There will be no Nativity Scene in Washington this year! The Supreme Court has ruled that there cannot be a Nativity Scene in the Capital again this this Christmas season.

This isn't for any religious reasons; they simply have not been able to find Three Wise Men in the nation's capital.

The search for a virgin continues.

There was no problem, however, finding enough asses to fill the stable.

A lot of our celebrations at Christmas are actually based on a pagan mid winter ritual that was already well established at this time of year a long time before chistianity arrived. The Christians just did what they normally did and tagged onto exisiting celebrations with their own stories in order to get the people interested (as they also did with Easter and other festivals).

Since then it has become kind of 'assumed' that the birth of Jesus actually happened at this time of year when in fact there is no direct eveidence that it did.

Most of the stuff we do at modern Christmas (other than go to church) has little to do with biblical events. In fact a lot of the 'traditional' things we do at Christmas such as giving cards and presents were invented by the Victorians.

During puritanical 'Christian-fundamentalist' times under Oliver Cromwell Christmas was actually banned altogether.

If you look deep enough you'll find that the Christmas celebrations make us all pagans to some extent or another : )

Even the date is pagan :-O
Pope moved it long ago to coincide with winter solstice events
And Russian Orthodoxy never changed their calender, so Christmas is in January

Not even going to go into the whole issue that a prominent sect believes Christ was born in September ;

Christmas is where it is on the calender because the early Roman Christians had to hide it under an existing holiday. When Saturnalia is in full swing, no one is going to ask you why you are full of good cheer and going to parties at a buddies house. Having a worship service not involving an orgy had to be hidden somehow.

Later, as noted above, the Christians appropriated local pagan holidays and customs to make it easier to spread the faith. Let's face it, the Apostles didn't set up too many customs that would make you want to run out and join. ( contrast and compare with Mohammed and his deliberate establishment of rigid customs and life style. He learned from the Christians not to let his message be diluted. Also he was seriously OCD )

Determination of the official date of Christmas came a new calender and the growth of one dominant church later.

I always assumed Jesus was born in March. Wasn't that the time of the Roman census?

Anyhoo... it does suck that Christianity is under attack so much. It unpleasantly reminds me...... to misquote. "first they came for the jews, but I did nothing since..... "
