My son dropped his Ipod Touch gen 4 last week and cracked the screen. I know some people on here know how to replace the screen... I don't. Anybody willing to shoot me a quote on the replacement and then do the work in a timely manner? Thanks | ||

I had this same incident 3 weeks ago. I went to 3 different independent iPhail repair shops, and they all wanted to charge me $189 to replace it because they said they couldn't fix a 4th gen. Went to the Apple store and got it replaced for $99. Don't bother asking them to move the apps or music onto the new unit. (Message edited by pwnzor on December 02, 2011) | ||

Did the Apple store gave you a replacement unit or did you get your unit back? Never thought that the songs/apps/movies would disappear when replacing the screen. Going to have to check where the nearest Apple store is. I don't think we have one anywhere near here. | ||

It isnt hard replacing it yourself. There are videos on youtube that shows you how. Replacement screens are cheap on eBay. | ||

There is a local computer shop in Torrance, CA, Advanced Micro Systems, that specializes in repairing iPod, iPod Touch & iPhone units and they'll do it on the counter while you watch if they're not too busy. They replaced the worn-out headphone jack on my old iPod for $45. Then a couple weeks later they replaced the logic board after I inadvertently reversed polarity on the charging cable while the output jack was connected to the car's radio input jack. Poof! went the newly replaced headphone jack, damnit. $112 to fix that and they goodwill replaced the headphone jack no charge. BTW, Macmall doesn't repair the old iPods, so I didn't even try the local Apple store. | ||

The stores I went to all told me the same thing, 4th gen isn't like 3rd gen, which are apparently easy to fix. I only know what I'm told on this subject, because I don't use iProducts myself. I saw the screens on sale on eBay, but I'm leaning toward what I was told at three separate independent shops that literally walked my business out the door because they didn't want to touch it. | ||

iPhone repair is somewhat easy. iPOD repair is a royal pain in the @#$ and 99% of the time it wont fit flat because the back is dented and the replacement adhesive is twice as thick. Back up your data and apps and music via iTunes on your comp, restore it to factory if it's jailbroken, and go to the apple store like Pwnzer did. iPhones are worth repairing. 4th gen iPod touches are not, because the screen and lcd are glued together like the new iPhones/iPads, so the part is pricey compared to the older models, and the fact that most stuff on the iPod is soldered together rather than bolted makes it that much less feasible to work on. $100 is HALF what I would charge to repair one. You literally have to remove almost everything on the 4 the gen iPod touch to change screen, and it's not easy. Plus, you have to be excedingly cautious not to accidentally cut the speaker wire at the bottom that is soldered to a plate that is stuck to the digitizer with adhesive, and you have to be careful not to cut the wires to the power button when using the knife to pry between the frame and the glass for separation, and you have to remember to pull the antenna plate off the old digitizer and put it on the new one cuz the new one wont have one. And the digitizer connects to the backside of the motherboard instead of the front where the LCD connects, so you have to gently remove the motherboard (logic board) which is in a large "C" shape and easy to snap. having fun yet? | ||

Yeah, not to mention the the iPod 4 has 1/4 of the RAM that the iPhone 4 has. I won't own another. Actually, the 16/32/64 GB versions have more ram I believe, but the 8 GB iPT4 I had had 128 mb of ram. |
