John (Stroki), It was the "That REALLY pisses them off" comment that caught my attention. Sounds very vindictive. Though I've not suffered divorce myself, I can empathize as I've yet to forgive the lying, cheating loser who used to be my brother-in-law and the lying, cheating delusional witch who used to be the wife of a good friend. I just don't understand. If someone is unwilling to keep their vows, then at least they ought to have the integrity to be up front and honest about it BEFORE skulking around like some Jerry Springer show guest wanna-be. So I can understand, but I can also see the hurt it does to everyone. (Message edited by Blake on November 29, 2011) |

John, You're so right. She got the almost all the material stuff but I have both my son's hearts. I don't have to ask myself who got the better deal. She had exclusive use of the house until June of 2013 when youngest graduates high school. Won't last that long. She's already way behind on the mortgage. Plus she's blown through the money her father left her. She has whizzed away $400,000 with NOTHING to show for it. About half was lost in the stock market crash but I have no idea where the rest of it went. I really don't care, it's none of my business any more. She still tries do press my buttons but now I don't have to play the game. Drives her wild when I don't buy into her craziness. I'm polite but don't play along. I don't need revenge, I'm too busy rebuilding and being content. I have my sons, I enjoy what I do for a living most days and I pay my bill on time. She drinks like a fish, neither boy wants to be around her and she's had 4 jobs in 2 1/2 years. I don't need to do or say a thing because sometimes karma will turn around and bit ya' on the arse. Life is good! |

"Went through the Big D and don't mean Dallas - I got the Jeep, she got the palace..." Been through one and it was a real kick to the nuts - never saw it coming in my case. And I agree with Blake on this one in that I actually took the vows seriously - oh well, see where that got me? A friend gave me some advice that was very good in my case: Treat it like a business transaction and (try to) keep the emotion out of it. It goes smoother and you avoid getting bogged down into a pissing match (where everyone gets wet). Yep - two more years and I will have an extra $1000/month disposable income. |

"I am still looking to marry an old, filthy rich and terminally ill man..." You forgot the last line "and one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel". |

I've already known that I got myself too deep with debt and am starting to get myself out. That Dave Ramsey link inspired me to put a little worksheet together. I didn't take into account any "extra" spending (new toys, vacations, etc), but I also didn't take into account any change in my paycheck so I'm going to guess that it all evens out that way. Bottom line, if I stick to my guns, in 10 years I can have everything paid off, including student loans and the house, be 100% debt free AND have about $35k in my pocket. Real world? I'll need a new car before then and probably another bike or two, so the house will take a little longer to pay off. |

They like younger women When you can afford to you buy new! According to Louisa May Alcott a wife should be half her husbands age plus 7 years. So Chars looking for a 105 yr old |

That's REALLY cool that you have a plan! Many folks are like All-American running backs carrying a ball without knowing where the goal line is. Goals ...... To have any value ...... Need to be measurable. You've taken a huge step ( you are in the 1% if you don't know it) toward achieving your goals and being master of your financial future. Congratulations! |

The link really didn't change my tactics any, only got me to think of taking things further. My ultimate goal is to return to being debt free, but I've broken it into paying unsecured/toy loans first, then the things I'm okay with having a note on but would rather not (car, house). The only exception is student loans - they get pushed off only because the ratio of payoff amount and monthly savings is so small compared to other loans. I'm sure it will take me longer than 10 years to pay the house off because I'll want other things to do with my cash (travel, new bikes and cars, etc), but I feel confident that I can reduce the term on that loan dramatically now. Anyone know where I can plug in some numbers somewhere and find out how putting extra towards my mortgage will effect my pay-off date? I already do an extra payment each year (as well as paying bi-monthly), but I'll soon find myself able to do a lot more when it's the only thing I'll owe money on. |
